Your Paradise story time is divided into three parts: the time of former director Joo Jung-soo, the time of current director, and the time of new director seven years later. This text contains not only the way rulers govern but also the way inmates change by their rule. In this regard, the article focuses not only on Cho Baek-heon, but also on the relationship of the characters surrounding Sorok Island. There are two things that I would like to focus on: First, Depending on the difference in governance strategies, there is also a qualitative change in the mood of the director and inmates and the possibility of solidarity called the “joint destiny.” Second, the nature of labor and struggle for recognition. By looking at these two aspects, we are going to reveal the process of the islanders’ transition from slave to object and subject. Part 1 was made to realize looked at the surveillance by the vigilant and the impossibility of ‘we’. The relationship between domination and control in the past period of Joo Jeong-su and current period of Cho Baek-heon lies in a kind of mirror relationship. In past violent governance, there is no recognition of the community at all, and the inmate are considered slaves and tools to complete the director’s achievements. At this time, the labor of inmate turns into the work of slaves. In Part 2, an incomplete ‘we’ is established by expanding the boundary of the binomial formation. While the semantic structure extends to the relationship between patient-to-health, island-to-land, human-to-natural and individual-to-social, the director takes a strategy that governs the spirit and emotions of inmate. The director establishes an incomplete ‘we’ relationship with the inmate by creating a ‘common enemy’ that collectively names people outside the island. Inmate work is defined as voluntary work and human work against nature. Through the process of working against nature, inmate become human. Part 3 looked at the possibility of solidarity and hospitality caused by the role of the intermediary. Cho Baek-heon’s spontaneous return to Sorokdo is not a director but a return as a normal doctor, which means solidarity by voluntary choice to bear common destiny. This is an expression of the will to take on the role of a third-party mediator or facilitator, away from the relationship between domination and control. Inmate show pure hospitality, absolute hospitality to the landers, even when they are locked in an island with a conditional hospitality by the land people.

『당신들의 천국』은 시간적으로 과거 주정수 원장의 시절, 현재 조백헌 원 장의 시절, 그리고 그 이후 7년이 지난 새로운 원장의 시절로 시간적 분절을 두고 서사를 전개한다. 그러면서 주정수와 조백헌 원장의 지배방식은 물론 그 지배방식에 의해 변화하는 원생들의 모습을 담아내고 있다. 그런 점에서 이 작품은 조백헌이라는 한 인물에 대한 주목을 넘어서 ‘소록도’라는 공간 에서 벌어지는 사건을 둘러싼 인물들 간의 ‘관계’를 문제 삼고 있다. 본고는 초점화자를 중심으로 작품의 서사구조의 특징을 밝히면서, 이러한 서사구조를 통해 생성되는 두 가지 의미화의 층위에 주목하였다. 첫째, 소록 도의 원장과 원생의 관계와 관련된 지배전략의 변화에 따라 원장과 원생들의 감정의 동향과 ‘공동운명체’라는 연대의 가능성도 질적 변화를 겪는다. 둘째, 노동의 성격과 인정투쟁이다. 이 두 측면을 살펴봄으로써 섬사람들이 노예에서 타자로, 그리고 주체로 거듭나는 과정을 밝히고자 하였다. 1부에서는 경계자에 의한 감시와 ‘우리’의 불가능성에 대한 환기를 살펴 보았다. 과거 주정수 원장 시절 폭력적인 지배관계에서는 공동체에 대한 인 식이 전혀 없으며, 원생을 원장의 성과와 업적을 완성시키기 위한 노예, 도 구로 간주한다. 이때 원생의 노동은 노예의 노동으로 전락한다. 2부에서는 지배자의 시선을 통해 이항대립의 경계확장에 의해 불완전한 ‘우리’가 정립되는 과정을 살펴보았다. 환자 대 건강인, 섬 대 육지, 인간 대 자연, 개인 대 사회의 관계로 의미구조가 확장되는 가운데, 조백헌 원장은 원생들의 정신과 감정을 지배하는 전략을 취한다. 원장은 섬 바깥의 사람들 을 통칭하는 ‘공동의 적’을 만듦으로써 원생들과 불완전한 ‘우리’의 관계를 정립한다. 그 결과 원생들의 노동은 자발적 노동이자, 자연과 대결하는 인간 의 노동으로 질적 변화를 겪는다. 3부에서는 매개자의 역할에 의한 연대와 환대의 가능성을 살펴보았다. 조 백헌의 자발적 귀향은 원장으로서가 아닌 평범한 의사로서의 귀환으로, 공 동 운명을 짊어지려는 자발적 선택에 의한 연대라는 의미를 갖는다. 이는 지배와 피지배의 관계에서 벗어나 제3자로서 조력자의 역할을 감당하겠다 는 의지의 발현이다. 원생들은 육지 사람들이 경계를 둔 섬이라는 관용의 문턱, 혹은 조건부의 환대에 갇혀 있으면서도 육지 사람들에게 순수한 환대, 절대적 환대를 보여준다.
