This study aimed to study the publication of Print-edited classical novels in the Publisher Guild in Seoul(京城書籍業組合). The Guile was formed in 1916 with the aim of promoting the friendship and business development of its members. In order to enhance the economic benefits of members, a 『List of classified books(『圖書分類目錄』) was prepared and promoting exclusive publication of books. In the early days of the establishment of the Publisher Guild in Seoul, many books were purchased and sold jointly but later books were published under the name of the Guild. Among the Print-edited classical novels, many of them were acquired from or rented out the publishing rights of books already issued by union members. However, the publishing activities of the Publisher Guild in Seoul were not very successful. The amount of books published under the Guild name was not very large, which did not affect the book market at that time. However, it seems that the distribution of books has been largely affected. In particular, the distribution of books introduced here at the assembly level by preparing the 『library classification list would lower the unit price of books, while increasing the scope and depth of product mix, thereby enhancing the economic benefits of members.

본 연구는 경성서적업조합에서의 고전소설의 출판에 관한 연구를 목적으로 하였다. 경성서적업조합은 조합원의 친목과 영업의 발전을 도모할 목적으로 서울에서 활동하는 발행소를 중심으로 1916년에 결성이 되었다. 그리고 조합원의 경제적 이익을 제고하기 위하여 『도서분류목록』을 작성하여 조합원이 비조합원 및 다른 조합원이 발행한 서적을 유통할 수 있도록 하는 한편, 서적의 배타적 출판을 도모하였다. 경성서적업조합의 결성 초기에는 주로 조합원이나 비조합원이 이미 발행한 서적을 가지고 공동으로 구매하여 판매하는 경우가 많았으나, 이후에는 조합 명의로 서적을 발행하였다. 활자본 고전소설 가운데 조합에서 발행한 것이 확인된 것은 65회인데, 그중에는 조합원이 이미 발행한 서적의 출판권을 조합에서 인수, 혹은 대여하여 동일한 판본으로 발행하는 경우가 많았는데, 이런 경우에는 판차까지 이어받는 경우가 많았다. 그러나 경성서적업조합의 출판 활동은 그리 성공적이지 못하였다. 비록 서울에서 일하는 대부분의 출판사가 조합에 가입하였음에도 불구하고 조합의 이름으로 출판된 책의 양은 그리 많지 않아서 당시의 책 시장에 영향을 미치지 못하였기 때문이다. 다만 당대 서적의 유통에 끼친 영향은 컸을 것으로 보인다. 특히 『도서분류목록』을 작성하여 여기에 소개된 서적을 조합 차원에서 유통하는 것은 서적 구입 단가를 낮추는 한편, 제품 믹스의 폭과 깊이를 더하여 조합원의 경제적 이익을 제고하였을 것이다.
