This paper aims to explore various aspects of power reflected in ‘Gilnyeo’, included in Shin-Donbok;s Haksan-haneon. As the heroin of this work, Giljǒng, is an unique character in a sense that she wielded a sword to a corrupted governor, former studies have stressed emphasis on ‘Gilnyeo’ as a work that shows dynamics of the late Chosǒn society. Yet, ‘Gilnyeo’ has never been analyzed intensively. This paper is the first work to focus on ‘Gilnyeo’ itself. Throughout the text, ‘power’ is the main concept that causes conflicts between characters. Giljǒng is in the lowest hierarchy level among characters, being an orphan, child of a concubine, and also concubine of a aristocrat. Family of her uncle abuses patriarchal power to sell her to a corrupted governor. The governor abuses public power to satisfy his sexual desire. As their power victimizes Giljǒng, she decides to kill them all. The narrator values her resistance because he understands it as an expression of chastity ideology. However, analyzing Giljǒng’s dialogue, it can be assumed that she did not intend to be a ‘virtuous’ or ‘chaste’ woman. Rather, she acted upon the rage against the powerful men that have intentionally ignored her emotions and abused their power. It is very problematic that she is ‘aware’ of the irrationality of the power and ‘actively’ seeks the solution, but the narrative power which tries to keep the ideology weakens her strong image. Therefore, it can be concluded that various aspects of power in the text create the ambivalent heroin. The power of antagonists contribute to making Giljǒng a strong and resistant character, whereas the power of the narrator makes her an obedient conformist. The value of this text is to show such sharp conflicts between a problematic individual and the social pressure that ceaselessly tries to deny her desire.

본 논문은 辛敦復(1692～1779)의 󰡔鶴山閑言󰡕에 수록된 <길녀>에 대한 작품론이다. <길녀>는 얽히고설킨 권력 관계 속에서 인물의 갈등이 야기되고 심화되며 해소되는 작품이므로 ‘권력’이라는 키워드를 통해 작품을 분석했다. 주인공 길정이 분노하고 저항한 까닭은 첫째, 자신의 의사와 감정이 무시당했기 때문이며 둘째, 서녀이자 소실이라는 자신의 취약한 입지를 이용해 욕망을 채우고자 한 폭압적 권력의 부당성을 자각하여 이를 혐오했기 때문이다. 더구나 그 분노의 대상은 자신의 소외를 묵인한 사회 전체로 확장된다. 요컨대 길정은 주체적 인격의 유린에 저항하고 인간 소외에서 벗어나고자 하는 적극적 의지를 가진 여성이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 길정의 이러한 면모는 구술자를 포함한 이야기 향유층의 시각 및 작가의 저술의식이 빚어낸 ‘서사적 권력’에 의해 이념적으로 착색된다. 따라서 길정이 실상 대단히 문제적 인물인 데 비해 작품에서 그는 烈 이데올로기에 충실한 여성처럼 그려지고 있다. <길녀>에 저항성과 보수성이 길항 작용을 하는 것은 이 때문이다. 이 작품의 의의는, 비단 저항하는 인간형을 그려낸 것에 있는 데 아니라 한 인간과 그를 다양한 권력으로 억압하고자 하는 사회와의 첨예한 갈등을 잘 보여줌에 있다.
