In this article, I reviewed the annotations in “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword” (3rd edition), which is a synonym for Korean version “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword”, which is a synonym of Kim Yun-sik and Oh Inseok. And I looked at the perspective and ethics of the translator. The results are summarized as follows. Let’s start with a translator’s perspective. Kim, Yoon-Sik and Oh In-seok have put a great deal of weight on “knowledge related to Japan” when annotating the third edition. This means that when they commented, they were stronger to comment for Korean readers who were not familiar with Japan. And this tendency was consistent from the first edition “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword”. Next, let’s look at the ethics of the translator. They wanted to keep the principle of dividing original annotation and Translator annotation in Korean version. It is worth evaluating in terms of the ethics of the translator. In the third edition, however, there is a portion of the Japanese translator, Hasegawa, who has borrowed the annotations without proper quoting marks. This point must be evaluated negatively in terms of the ethics of the translator.

본고에서는 한국어판 『국화와 칼』의 대명사라고 할 수 있는 김윤식･오인석이 공역(共譯)한 제3판 『국화와 칼』에 보이는 주석을 고찰하여 번역자의 관점과 윤리에 대해 각각 살펴봤다. 그 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 먼저 번역자의 관점에서 살펴보자. 김윤식･오인석은 제3판에서 주석을 붙일 때 ‘일본 관련 지식 유형’에 큰 비중을 두었다. 이것은 그들이 주석을 달 때 일본을 잘 모르는 한국인 독자를 위해 주석(註釋)을 한다는 생각이 강했다는 것을 의미한다. 그리고 이런 번역자의 관점은 제1판부터 일관됐다. 다음으로 번역자의 윤리에서 보자. 그들은 한국어판 『국화와 칼』에서 주석을 붙일 때 원주(原註)와 역주(譯註)를 구분하여 표기한다는 기본 원칙을 지키고자 했다. 번역가의 윤리 측면에서 평가할 만하다. 그러나 제3판에는 일본인 번역자인 하세가와(長谷川)의 주석을 적절한 ‘인용 표기’ 없이 그대로 차용한 부분이 보인다. 이 점은 번역자의 윤리 측면에서 부정적으로 평가할 수밖에 없다.
