This study aimed to investigate aspects of Buddhism-related stories contained in the 18th-century historical storybooks, and to study the meanings of these aspects in terms of writers and the age. The most common feature of the monks appearing in the 18th-century Yadam books is that they became considerably secularized, compared to those in the books of Silla and Koryo Dynasties. Although Yadam book compilers called Kyeonghwasejok had positive awareness of Buddhism due to their direct, indirect contact with Buddhism and association with monks, they showed the Confucian aspect against the evil of Buddhism exposed in reality and ideology. Most of the stories they received in gaps between affirmation and denial were Buddhist stories based on weird materials. By using the setup of eccentric monks, they avoided the extreme choice and selected eclectic alternative. Nevertheless, they tried to keep distance from them through channels of forming stories and verdict. They tried to approach the stories in the mediator position, neither far nor close, from the level of interest, not from the ideological level. The reason that the Buddhist aspect of the stories became secularized was because of compilers' keeping distance like this. Therefore, the Buddhism-related stories contained in the 18th-century Yadam books are not to express criticism of Buddhist awareness that compilers had, but to show the trace of accepting weird stories based on the individual experience of compilers.

본고는 18세기 야담집에 드러나는 승려 관련 이야기들의 양상을 살피고, 이러한 양상이 가지는 의미를 작가와 시대의 측면에서 밝혀보려 했다. 18세기 야담집의 승려들은 신라나 고려 때의 이야기에 비해 상당히 세속화되어 있다는 점이 가장 공통적인 특징이다. 경화세족이라는 야담집 편찬자들은 승려와의 교유나, 불교와의 직, 간접적인 접촉으로 인해 긍정적인 인식을 가졌으면서도, 현실적 사상적으로 드러나는 불교의 폐단에 대해서는 어김없이 유학자로서의 면모를 보여주었다. 긍정과 부정이라는 괴리의 사이에서 그들이 받아들인 대부분의 이야기는 기이한 소재를 바탕으로 한 불교 이야기였다. 그들은 기이한 승려라는 설정을 사용하여 극단적인 선택을 피하고, 절충적인 대안을 선택한 것이다. 그러면서도 이야기의 형성 경로나 평결을 통해 본인과의 거리는 유지하려고 했다. 멀지도 가깝지도 않은 중간자적 입장에서 이념적 차원이 아닌 흥미의 차원에서 이를 접근하고자 했다. 이야기의 불교적 면모가 세속화 된 것은 바로 편찬자들의 이러한 거리 두기에 있다. 따라서 18세기 야담집에 나타나는 불교관련 이야기는, 편찬자들이 가지는 불교인식의 포폄을 드러내기 위해서가 아니라 편찬자 개인 경험에 기반을 둔 기이한 이야기의 수용 흔적으로 자리 잡고 있다.
