This writing began with an idea of the tool-like value of the square as a place for public discourse. First, autonomous deterritorialization is achieved through a rational understanding based on the practical need and desire of the space user. On the other hand, re-territorialization by batting average is based on the political merit or a rational understanding of the special economy. This paper focuses on these two gaps that will emerge when the square as a discourse space of the city changes in terms of material structure and abstract perception. The area of former JeollaNam-do provincial office located in Gwangju is tangibleevidence that allows us to understand the isolation and resistance of Gwangju May 1980 from the perspective of the party. In addition, it is a space that carries a thesis that can bring the experience of the place to the level of human political dilemma. On the other hand, is also an example of the process of becoming a place of memory struggle in which opposing confrontation of spatial memory is incorporated while being incorporated into political re-territorialization, when the occupation of space is completed and the positionality of the place is changed by the dominant system of political power. Therefore, this article, I attempted to examine the process of collective identity experiencing the reconfiguration of emotion and consciousness while accepting new abstract information according to the transformation of physical space. Considering the restructuring of the area of former Jeonnam provincial office centered on the Asian Culture Center, urban malpractice resulting from the loss of subjectivity in the process of memory struggle over space power can be said to be the experience of ‘death of transformed space’ or ‘mechanical objectification of cognition’. This shows that the spatial transformation of space is not solely caused by requiring or changing the perception of space users. In order for the cultural city space including the ACC to function as a base for the regeneration of the city and cross-social communication, the process of bringing in the daily routines of the space users on the unfamiliar terrain and the objects that have been transplanted into the space should be followed. After all, Gwangju’s 5·18 discourse space must be returned to those who have experienced and remembered it. So it will be memorized and memorized again, or in another form, and it will be able to create the value of another exchange with the memory of its solidarity.

이 글은 공적 담론의 공간으로서 광장이 지녀온 도구적 가치에 착안하며 출발하였다. 도시의 광장은 행정적·문화적·경제적 측면에서 실체의 확인과 교류, 의식과 의견의 소통 이 이루어지는 일종의 마당이었다. 이 글은 도시의 담론 공간으로서 광장이 물질적 구조 와 추상적 인식의 측면에서 변화하게 될 때, 공간 이용자의 필요와 욕구에 근거한 자율적 탈영토화와 합리적 이해나 정책적 당위 등에 의해 타율적으로 이루어지는 공간의 재영토 화 사이의 비판적 경계에 주목하였다. 그리고 공간 변형에 있어, 그 공간을 실제 일상 속에서 이용하며 그 곳이 지닌 역사·문화적 장소성을 현재에 이르기까지 구성해 온 공간 주체의 자발적 동인과 자율적 구상이 반영되지 못하는 경우의 폐해와 대안점을 논구하고 자 했다. 광주의 구 도청 일원은 1980년 5월 광주의 고립과 저항을 당사자적 관점에 의해 이해할 수 있는 유형(有形) 증거물이다. 또한, 한 장소의 경험을 인간의 정치적 딜레마의 층위까지 끌어올려 상기시킬 수 있는 테제를 담지하며, 그와 관련된 수많은 담론을 역사 적 자산으로 환원할 수 있는 가능성을 지닌 공간이다. 동시에, 공간의 점유가 완성되고 국가나 지방의 정치권력 지배체계 혹은 분파적 이해관계 등에 의해 그 장소성이 타율적 으로 변이되는 경우에, 정치적 재영토화에 편입되는 한편 공간기억의 대항대립이 이루어 지는 기억투쟁의 장소가 되는 과정을 보여주는 사례이기도 하다. 하지만 아시아문화전당을 중심으로 한 구 전남도청 일원의 재구성 사례를 볼 때, 공간 권력을 둘러싼 기억 투쟁의 과정에서 주체성의 상실이 가져오는 도시적 병폐란 ‘변형된 공간의 사화(死化)’ 또는 ‘인식의 기계적 사물화(事物化)’를 경험하는 일임을 발견하게 된다. 이는 공간의 장소성 변형이 단지 공간 이용자의 인식 변화를 요구하거나 강제하는 것만으로 이루어지지 않음을 보여준다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로, 이 글에서는 집단 적 정체성이 물적 공간의 변형에 따라 새로운 추상적 정보를 수용하면서 감성과 의식의 재구성을 경험하게 되는 과정을 5·18 담론 공간, 즉 구 전남도청 일원의 변화 사례를 통해 살펴보기로 하였다.
