This study was conducted to identify the publishing culture activities at Milyang area in the Gyeongsang region. Among them, we covered the printing culture of the Milyang region, which is well known as the home of the Pyochung Temple, one of our three traditional cultures Yeungnamroo and Samyungdaesa so on. Buddhism flourished early in Milyang, and Confucianism and classical science developed together in the Joseon Dynasty. As a result of the study, temples began to be published early on in Milyang, with temples focusing on the temple. From the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty to the end of the 19th century, publishing activities continued in this area. Also, the publishing activities of government offices continued until the 17th century with the publication of Confucian books and materials centered around the 15th century. Later in the late Joseon Dynasty, private publishing activities flourished as the demand for books in government offices moved to private houses. There were also many publishing activities in various places, such as Seowon, Jaesa, Hyanggyo, and Nujeong. Of the 113 books published in Milyang, 93 (82.3 %) were woodblock-printed. However, after the 19th century, 20 species (17.7%) of wooden type were published. This showed that private publishing preferred moer cheaper and efficient wooden type printing.

이 연구는 경상도 지역의 郡 단위 출판문화 활동을 파악하는 연구의 일환으로 수행되었다. 그 중 載藥山 表忠寺와 우리나라 3대 樓閣의 하나인 嶺南樓, 四溟大師와 佔畢齋의 고장으로 잘 알려진 밀양 지역의 인쇄 문화에 대하여 다루었다. 밀양에서는 일찍부터 불교가 융성하였고, 조선조 유교와 예학이 함께 발달하였다. 이 연구의 결과 밀양 지역의 萬魚寺와 表忠寺를 중심으로 한 사찰 출판은 조선 초기부터 19세기 말까지 꾸준한 빈도로 지속되었다. 또한 관청의 출판 활동도 15세기 密陽府를 중심으로 儒家書와 四書類를 간행하는 등 17세기까지 이어졌다. 이후 조선 후기에는 官에 대한 서적 수요가 私家로 옮겨가면서 사가 출판과 더불어 서원과 재사, 향교, 누정 등 다양한 장소의 출판 활동이 왕성하게 이루어졌다. 더불어 밀양 지역 판본의 간행 방식에서는 목판을 통한 판각 활동이 지역 간행서 113종 가운데 93종(82.3%)으로 큰 비중을 차지하였다. 하지만 19세기 이후에는 목활자를 통한 인쇄도 20종(17.7%)에 달해 私家에서는 경제적인 비용과 작업 효율성이 뛰어난 목활자 인쇄도 선호되었음을 알 수 있었다.
