Gukjo oryeui國朝五禮儀 is a Book of national rites published along with the Gukjo orye seorye國朝五禮序例. It is most important source to understand the national rites in the early Joseon Dynasty. It contains a lot of research source about almost every field of studies: literature, history, philosophy, religious studies, art history, abdominal history, military service, institutional history, and music history. In the field of "musicology," Gukjo oryeui and Gukjo orye seorye have been regarded as very important literature source, and considerable numbers of papers are published. However, there are still some needs of theoretical and methodological issues how to read and apply it because the study of the text itself is not easy and the contents of book covers large-scale. Therefore, this article is intended to examine what musical perspective and methodology is acceptable to use it as a source material. First of all, I take a brief look at the process of publication and the characteristics of the organization on the Gukjo oryeui and Gukjo orye seorye. Secondly, I consider the method how to read it. And then, I would like to have an opportunity to think about the meaning and limitations of the books as a historical material for music studies.

『국조오례의』는 『국조오례서례』와 함께 간행된 국가전례서로 조선 전기 국가전례의 틀을 이해하기 위해 반드시 분석해야 할 전적이다. 국가전례서에는 학문의 거의 전 분야에 걸친 내용, 즉 문학, 역사, 철학, 종교학, 미술사, 복식사, 군제사, 제도사, 음악사 등의 영역에서 연구해야 할 내용이 많이 담겨 있다. 이에 현재까지 여러 학문 영역에서 다양한 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 이처럼 음악학 분야에서도 국조오례의와 국조오례서례가 중요한 문헌으로 간주되어 왔지만 그 내용이 방대하고 심오하여 이를 어떻게 읽어내고 활용해야 하는지 그 방법론적 탐색은 여전히 더 이루어져야 한다. 이 글에서 국가전례서를 어떠한 음악학 시선과 방법론으로 읽어내며 연구를 수행해야 할 것인지 고찰하려 한다. 먼저 『국조오례의』와 『국조오례서례』의 간행 경위와 기록의 특징에 대해 간략하게 살펴보고 『국조오례의』와 『국조오례서례』의 음악기록을 어떻게 읽어야 하는지 그 독법(讀法)에 대해 고민해 본 후 국가전례서의 음악학 사료로서의 의미와 한계에 대해 생각해 보는 기회를 갖고자 한다.
