Dragons and dragon motifs are featured in many works of modern art history, particularly within the Chinese world as new national representative art genre. As it has been seen as really a national representation from the ancient period of China by considering it is necessary to select and develop its feature for the future national symbol. This study explores origin of dragon illustration and symbol, as early as the past centuries, and researches its historical change. Some contemporary cases would be proposed, as design and graphic ones, for comparing its realistic and symbolic methods in creation, and color application between the past and the present. As results, in works of contemporary design, dragon expression often fulfill its modernist simplification which reinforces yet an characteristic dragon's traditional image while its comic and idyllic expression are to grow increasingly dragon's positive aspects due to color application in diversity. It is important also to notice that its contemporary works are changing some patriarch image of dragon to some 'familiarity'. One of the most iconic modern and contemporary dragons would be from its familiarity which seems to fit more into the globalized setting of illustration world.

근래 들어 중국의 경제성장과 함께 디자인 분야가 활성화되면서 중국 국가이미지의 현대화가 중요한 과 제로 떠오르고 있다. 이에 중국의 민족 문화요소 중 에서 중국을 상징하는 데 있어 가장 큰 대표성을 갖 는 용 문양을 중화민족의 특성과 국제성을 동시에 겸 비한 현대적인 감각의 디자인 작품으로 변화, 발전시 킬 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 중국 용 문양의 기원과 시대적 변화에 대한 기본적 탐색을 거 쳐, 2000년대 이후 중국의 현대디자인에 활용된 용 문양의 사례를 중심으로, 그래픽 디자인 자료를 수집 하고 이를 대상으로 사실적 표현방법과 상징적 표현 방법을 비교하고, 전통적 색채와 현대적 색채의 사용 에 따른 차이점도 비교 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 중국의 상징이 되는 용 문양의 현대적 변용은 상징적 표현방법에 의한 특정 부분의 단순화 로 용의 이미지가 더욱 강화되는 효과가 있으며, 유 머러스한 표현과 다양한 색채로 용의 부정적 이미지 를 탈피할 수 있는 가능성을 발견하였다. 또한 용의 전통적 이미지에서 오는 ‘권위’를 ‘친근함’으로 변화시키는 것이 중요한 것으로 확인되었으며, 용 문 양을 디자인 하고 개발하는 과정에서 동양이나 서양 에서 모두 동일한 이미지를 갖게 하는 것이 용 문양 의 현대적 변용의 핵심이 되어야 한다. 결론적으로 중국 용 문양의 현대적 변용의 올바른 방향은 도형의 단순화, 특정 부분의 이미지를 강화하 고, 다채로운 색상의 도입으로 유머러스한 분위기로 친근감을 줄 수 있다면 중국인들은 물론, 동양과 서 양에서 모두 좋아할 수 있는 이미지의 표현이 그 핵 심이 될 것으로 예측되었으며, 용 문양이 현대적인 디자인으로 완벽한 변화를 통해 중국의 용에 대한 인 식이 바뀌어, 중국 국가이미지와 더불어 중국 현대 디자인의 국제화에 도움이 될 것이라 기대된다.
