Physical education has made a lot of progress since 1960. However, until now, there is a lot of criticism about the terminology of physical education. Therefore, this study is about definitions of physical education, sports, games, and play. The results of the study are as follows. First, physical education is (1) education through physical activity. (2) Education for the body. Next is the definition of sports, games, and play. Sports, games, and play are all areas of fun, but they are different. Play is human free play activity. A game is a fun (witty) activity of rules and competition. Sports is an activity that competes with 'physical abilities and skills' through fun, rules and competition. The body's abilities and skills are personal abilities accumulated in the body.

체육(體育, physical education)이 학문적 독립선언(1960년대)을 한 후, 그동안 많은 발전을 이룩하였다. 그러 나 현재까지 체육학 용어(用語)에 대한 시비(是非)가 많다. 따라서 이 연구는 체육학 관련용어, 즉 체육, 스포츠, 게임, 놀이의 정의(定義, definition)에 대한 것이다. 이에 이 연구는 용어의 정의에 대하여 다음과 같은 시론(試論)을 제시한 다. 우선 체육은 (1) 신체활동을 통한 교육(全人 혹은 社會 敎育)과 (2) 신체를 위한 교육(신체 자체를 위한 교육과 신체기술능력을 위한 교육)이다. 다음으로 스포츠(sports)와 게임(game) 그리고 놀이(play)의 정의이다. 스포츠, 게 임, 놀이는 모두 유희(遊戱)의 분야이지만 각기 서로 다르다. 놀이는 구속되지 않는 인간의 자유로운 유희활동이다. 게 임(game)은 유희적 요소와 함께 규칙 그리고 경쟁으로 승부(결과)의 재미가 수반되는 재치활동이다. 스포츠(sports) 는 놀이적 성격(유희)과 게임적 성격(규칙과 경쟁 및 승부)을 기반으로 신체의 능력과 기술을 겨루는 재치활동이다. 여기서 신체의 능력과 기술이란 신체에 축적된 기술과 능력으로 노력과 경험이 필요하다.
