Of the Poomsae events in Taekwondo, the Freestyle Poomsae is uniquely accompanied by music and presents a variety of unpredictable technical movements. Music introduced in the Freestyle Poomsae, in particular, promotes emotional communication and serves as a chance for the Freestyle Poomsae to receive greater responses from the audience. There is a recent need for basic data about the meanings and selection of music in the Freestyle Poomsae in Taekwondo. This study thus set out to investigate the meanings of the Freestyle Poomsae and its music and reached the following conclusions: first, there are three Poomsae events in Taekwondo, and they are Authorized, New, and Freestyle Poomsae; second, music introduced in the Freestyle Poomsae in Taekwondo is in harmony with overall Poomsae movements; third, music delivers the messages of creative Freestyle Poomsae in Taekwondo; fourth, the Freestyle Poomsae has artistry added to it through music in Taekwondo; and finally, the Freestyle Poomsae of Taekwondo contains the values of performance art. A set of guidelines should be established to promote the understanding of music and figure out the types of emotional responses to music for the effective selection of music in the Freestyle Poomsae.

태권도 자유 품새는 품새 경기 종목 중 유일하게 음악과 함께 진행되며, 다양한 예측불허의 기술 동작이 이루어진 다. 특히 자유 품새에 도입된 음악은 감성적 소통의 역할을 하며, 자유 품새가 더욱 관중들에게 큰 호응을 받는 계기로 작용하고 있다. 그래서 최근 태권도 자유 품새 음악의 의미 및 음악 선정에 대한 기초적인 자료의 필요성이 제기되었다. 이에 따라 이 연구는 태권도 자유 품새와 음악에 대한 의미를 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있었으며, 다음과 같은 결론을 도출 하였다. 첫째, 현재 태권도 품새 경기의 종목은 공인 품새, 새 품새, 자유 품새로 구분할 수 있다. 둘째, 태권도 자유 품새 의 음악 도입은 전체적인 품새 동작과 어울림의 조화를 야기한다. 셋째, 태권도 자유 품새의 음악은 창작된 자유 품새의 메시지를 전달하는 역할을 한다. 넷째, 태권도 자유 품새는 음악을 통해 예술성을 가미하게 되었다. 다섯째, 태권도 자유 품새는 공연예술의 가치를 지니고 있다. 앞으로 효과적인 자유 품새의 음악 선정을 위해서 음악의 이해와 더불어 음악이 지닌 정서적 반응의 유형을 파악할 수 있는 가이드라인이 구축되어야 할 것이다.
