This study aimed to help in setting a creative direction concerning vegan fashion design and it’s value by examining dilemmas found in vegan fashion designs. Research was conducted around vegan fashion brands that were approved by various environmental groups, as well as fashion magazines. And by carefully looking into their practices and limitations, the study was able to draw conclusive dilemmas from the common restraints. Types of dilemmas found in vegan fashion designs are as follows; first, plant fibers are mostly farmed using heavy pesticides and genetically mutated seeds which cause environmental stress. Here, a dilemma concerning the usage of non- organic plant fibers for vegan fashion could be erected. Second, to avoid hurting animals, vegan fashion uses synthetic fiber as an alternative to real animal fibers. A dilemma could be found concerning the severe environmental pollution as a result of manufacturing synthetic fibers, as well as whether or not lab made cruelty-free leather should be considered vegan. Third, the dilemma of ethical management is concerning the production of vegan fashion solely for profits and not for the sake of practicing veganism. Lastly, the dilemma concerning the political correctness of vegan fashion design and its' message. Vegan fashion design will overcome it's limits and be settled as a true vegan lifestyle, when the environmental protection and disinterested self-evaluation takes place in a form of continuous and active practice of veganism.

본 연구는 실천적 친환경 운동 비거니즘의 특징과 그 가치를 살펴보고, 비건 패션디자인에서 나타나는 딜레마 유형을 알아봄으로써 패션디자인이 앞으로 가져야 할 방향성을 확립하는데 도움이 되고자 하는 것에 목적을 두었다. 연구의 결과, 대표적인 환경과 동물보호 단체가 인증한 비건 패션 브랜드와, 패션 잡지에서 소개된 비건 패션 브랜드를 구체적으로 분석하여 비건 패션의 실천사항과 한계점을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 비건 패션디자인 사례에 나타난 공통적인 한계점에서 도출되는 딜레마 유형은 다음과 같은데, 첫째, 일반 식물성 소재는 대부분의 재배 과정에서 다량의 살충제 사용과 유전자의 변형 등 환경오염을 유발하는 과정을 거친 다. 이때 유기농 재배가 아닌 식물성 소재의 비건 여부에 관련한 식물성 소재의 딜레마가 나타난다. 둘째, 비건 패션디자인이 동물을 해치는 것을 기피하기 위해 인조가죽이나 인조 퍼와 같은 합성소재를 사용하는 경우가 많은데, 대용품으로 사용되는 합성소재가 유발하는 심각한 환경오염에 대한 문제와, 실험실에서 만들 어진 크루얼티-프리 동물 가죽의 비건 여부에 관련하여 동물성 소재의 딜레마가 나타난다. 셋째, 브랜드의 비건 패션디자인이 진정으로 비거니즘을 실천하기 위해서가 아니라, 경제적 이윤을 위해 운영되는 경우에서 윤리경영의 딜레마가 나타난다. 넷째, 비건 패션디자인이 내포하는 비건 메시지의 전달에 있어, 메시지가 정 확하고 정치적으로 올바른가, 또는 대중에게 거부감 없는 전달 방법으로 접근하는가에 관련한 정치적 올바름 의 딜레마가 나타난다. 비건 패션디자인은 환경을 보호하고 패션디자인의 윤리적 발전을 위해 현실적 실천과 객관적인 자가 검열이 올바르게 이루어질 때 그 한계점을 극복할 수 있으며, 현대 사회에서 필요한 진정한 비건 라이프스타일로써 자리 잡을 수 있을 것이다.
