The purpose of this paper is to examine the concept of “liberty” in Donghak in the perspective of John Rawls’s Political Liberalism. As democracy shall be supported by both liberty and equality in principle, a balanced respect for the two values is a prerequisite for the discussion of democracy. Regrettably, however, despite the fact that Donghak is considered a prototype of democracy in Korea, studies to date tend to have focused only on equality qualitatively and quantitatively, which inevitably led to insufficient research into the concept of liberty in Donghak. This paper attempts to comprehend “liberty” in Donghak in the perspective of John Rawls’s Political Liberalism. Main scriptures of Donghak were reviewed to inspect the meaning and use of “liberty”. It also shed light on the similarities and differences between liberty in Donghak and John Rawls’s Political Liberalism. The results of this study are as follows: First, a new viewpoint on “liberty” in Donghak is presented based on the perspective of John Rawls’s Political Liberalism. Second, the newly introduced viewpoint provides a modern interpretation of the meaning of “liberty” in Donghak philosophy. And third, this study contributes to an elevated standing of Donghak as it illustrates how the philosophy could overcome time and space constraints.

이 연구의 목적은 존 롤즈(John Rawls)의 ‘정치적 자유주의(Political Liberalism)’ 관점에서 동학의 ‘자유’ 개념을 고찰하는데 있다. 민주주의는 자유와 평등 두가치가 함께 작동하는 것을 기본 원리로 하고 있으며 따라서 민주주의에 관한 논의 역시 자유와 평등이 균형을 이루어야 한다. 하지만 동학은 한국 민주주의의 원형으로 평가받고 있음에도 불구하고 그 연구가 양적으로나 질적으로나 주로 평등성에 집중되어 있고 동학에 내재되어 있는 자유의 개념에 대한연구는 부족한 것이 현실이다. 이에 본 연구의 내용은 동학의 ‘자유’ 개념을 이해하기 위해 롤즈의 정치적자유주의 관점에서 이를 분석하는데 있다. 이를 위해 동학의 주요 경전에서‘자유’의 개념이 어떻게 함축되어있는지 살펴보고, 이것이 롤즈의 정치적 자유주의와 어떻게 조응하는지, 또 어떠한 차이가 있는지 다룰 것이다. 이 연구의 결과는 첫째, 롤즈의 정치적 자유주의 관점에서 동학의 ‘자유’ 개념을 바라보는 새로운 시각을 제시할 것이고 둘째, 이를 통해 동학의 사상체계에서 ‘자유’라는 개념이 갖는 의미를 현대적으로 조명할 수 있을 것이며 셋째, 궁극적으로 동학사상이 시간과 공간의 물리적 제한을 넘어 훌륭한 사상체계로서 그 위상을 재정립하는데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
