This article researches the multiple meanings of “Righteousness” in Zhu Xi’s philosophy. First, this searches for two kinds of meaning of Righteousness in ancient Chinese Confucianism. According to this paper, Mencius regarded Righteousness as personal moral decision and will or pure moral consciousness and nature, otherwise Xunzi accepted Righteousness as socio-ethical norm to establish social order and to enhance social collaboration. Based on this analysis, this article researches Zhu Xi’s Righteousness, Especially focusing on Zhu Xi’s interpretation on Cheng Yichuan’s words. Step a forward, this article examines Zhu Xi’s understanding about Mencius and Gaozi, and the significance of Righteousness in personal moral dimension. And then this article illuminates the extended meaning of Zhu Xi’s Righteousness. According to this researching, Zhu Xi’s Righteousness implied the comprehensive meanings to overcome subjectivization of Righteousness, to grip objective principles in external world, and to accomplish the appropriateness of all kind of beings. Finally, this article elucidates the ideal state of Righteousness in Zhu Xi’s thought.

이 논문은 주자 철학에서 의(義) 개념에 함축된 다층적 의미를 고찰하고 있다. 논문은우선 선진유가사상에 나타나는 두 가지 의(義)의 의미를 고찰하고 있다. 맹자는 의를 개인의 도덕적 결단과 의지 또는 순수한 도덕의식과 본성으로 간주했던 반면, 순자는 의를군집생활의 질서를 만들고 사회 역량을 높이기 위한 사회 윤리적 규범으로 간주하였다. 이러한 분석을 바탕으로 이 논문은 주자의 의 개념을 고찰하고 있다. 특히 주자가 정이천의 ‘재물위리, 처물위의’(在物爲理, 處物爲義)라는 말을 어떻게 해석하고 활용하였는가에 집중하여 주자의 의 개념을 조명하고 있다. 이 논문은 맹자와 고자에 대한 주자의 이해를 검토하고 개인 도덕의 차원에서 의의 의미가 무엇인지 해명하고 있다. 이러한 고찰에근거하여 이 논문은 주자 의 개념의 확장된 의미를 밝히고 있다. 고찰에 따르면 주자의의는 도덕의 주관화를 극복하고 외부세계의 객관적 리를 파악하며 외부 사물들의 의당함을 이룩한다는 포괄적인 의미를 담고 있는 것이다. 마지막으로 이 논문은 주자가 생각했던 ‘의가 완전히 실현된 이상적 상태’가 무엇이었는지 고찰하고 있다.
