This study tries to examine the essence of ‘virtue’ proposed by Confucius and divide ‘virtue’ into individual ethical and socio-ethical aspects to discuss the implications of social extension through the internalization of ‘virtue’. First, through the intrinsic meaning of ‘virtue’, it grants human behavior justification. ‘Virtue’ is a criterion for distinguishing between socially desirable human beings and unskilled human beings. And, in the relation between ‘morality’ and ‘virtue’, he concluded that ‘the morality’ is the source of ‘virtue’ as the heaven’s will. Second, ‘virtue’ of Confucius constitutes personal ethical aspect and socio-ethical aspect. However, the two will be with the interdependence rather than one stand at advantage over the other. Confucius was convinced that humans combined with virtue could make a virtuous society, and that only a society oriented to virtue could cultivate virtuous humans. Today we live in an era that promotes the loss of ‘virtue’. The individual as a moral subject should be more willing to cultivate ‘virtue’, and it is urgent to create a social climate that emphasizes human beings with ‘virtue’ as well as attitudes to practice them in real society.

이 글은 공자가 제시한 ‘덕’의 본질을 규명하고, 이를 토대로 ‘덕’을 개인 윤리적인 측면과 사회 윤리적인 측면으로 나누어 ‘덕’의 내재화를 통한 사회적 확장이 지닌 함의에 대해논의하고자 한다. 먼저 ‘덕’의 내재적 의미를 통해 볼 때 그것은 인간 행위의 정당성을 부여한다. ‘덕’은 사회적으로 바람직한 인간과 그렇지 못한 인간을 분별하는 기준이 된다. 그리고 ‘도(道)’와‘덕’의 관계에서 하늘의 이치로서 절대성을 지닌 ‘도’는 ‘덕’의 근원이 된다. 공자의 ‘덕’은 크게 개인 윤리적 측면과 사회 윤리적 측면을 구성한다. 그러나 이 둘은어느 것이 더 우위를 점유하는 것이 아닌 상호 의존성을 지닌 것이다. 공자는 ‘덕’을 겸비한 인간이 유덕한 사회를 만들 수 있으며, 또 ‘덕’을 지향하는 사회만이 유덕한 인간을 길러 낼 수 있다고 확신하였다. 오늘날 우리는 ‘덕’의 상실을 조장하는 시대에 살고 있다. 도덕적 주체로서의 개인은‘덕’을 함양해야 하겠다는 의지를 더욱 견지하면서 이를 현실 사회에서 실천하고자 하는자세와 함께 ‘덕’을 지닌 인간을 중시하는 사회적 풍토 조성이 무엇보다 시급하다 하겠다.
