Christian poetry is considered to lack poetic quality and tension as a poetry in the history of literature. Typical poetry has features of symbolism and summarization, but Christian poetry tend to be more prosaic as it confesses the faith. This does not happen only in literary world. In cultural and artistic community, if Christian image or subject is used in a work, it is often denigrated of its value. However, although Yun Dong-ju’s poems contains Christian subjects like “The Cross” and “Jesus Christ”, his works are still one of the most Korea’s beloved, and many people say “Prologue(Seoshi)” is their favorite one. The thesis starts from the question of why many love Yun Dong-ju. Yun Dong-ju cared about the humanity as God’s creation, confronted with the contradiction of the world, and still his faith was unwavering. He did not waver in faith nor social participation and had a silent and deep impact, showed humanity’s anguish and conflicts, consciousness of existence based on Christian reasons. Throughout the history and today, his works are read as Christian faith, concerns of human existence, concerns of whom that is confronting the reality of his own people.

문학사에서 기독교 이미지를 소재로 한 시, 기독교 신앙을 고백한 시들은 시로서 갖추어야 할 조건과 긴장감이 떨어진다는 평가를 받는다. 시는 상징과 압축을 특징으로 하는데, 신앙고백은 산문화되기 쉽기 때문이다. 문학계만 이러한 경향을 보이는 것은 아니다. 문화예술에 기독교 이미지와 소재가 반영되면 폄하하는 풍조가 일반화 되어 있다. 그러나 윤동주의 시에는 ‘십자가’, ‘예수 그리스도’와 같은 기독교 언어가 사용되었음에도 한국인들은 그를 가장 좋아하는 시인 가운데 하나로 꼽으며, ｢서시｣를 가장 애송하는 작품이라고 말한다. 대중들이 윤동주를 좋아하는 이유가 무엇인가라는 질문에서 이 논문은 시작되었다. 윤동주는 하나님이 만드신 인간에 관심을 가졌고, 세상의 모순을 직시하였고, 흔들리지 않는 신앙심을 가졌다. 윤동주는 신앙과 사회참여의 길항을 치우침 없이 조용하면서도 파급력을 가지고 세상 속 인간의 번민과 갈등, 기독교적 사유에 기반한 실존의식 등을 보여주었다. 그렇기 때문에 시간이 지나 현대까지 신앙적으로도, 인간존재의 고민으로도, 민족의 현실 앞에 선 자의 고민으로도 읽힌다.
