이청준 소설은 인간 존재의 내면을 잘 드러내며 생각의 환기를 통해 인 생에서 홀로 자아를 대면하는 존재로서 그 실존의 면모를 가장 잘 표현해 내고 있다. 본고에서 작가의 작품을 통한 자아 정체성의 치열한 구원의 서 정을 열어가는 것을 확인하고자 한다. 따라서 작가의식과 창작 기법(중층구 조의 구현의 독특한 장치)에 따른 다음의 네 단계로 나누어 작품을 다루고자 한다. 첫째, 인간실존과 사유로서, 세 편의 작품인 ｢병신과 머저리｣, ｢잔인 한 도시｣, ｢살아있는 늪｣, 둘째, 그의 삶에서 섬, 낙원, 말의 꿈, 원망(願望) 으로서 작품인 ｢이어도｣, ｢당신들의 천국｣ 그리고 셋째, 존재와 언어, 삶과 말로서 ｢날개의 집｣이 있으며, 마지막으로 신화와 구원의 역사로 ｢신화를 삼킨 섬｣등이 있다. 그의 작품 속에서 단독자로서 인간존재의 근원을 표출하기 위한 강한 집 착을 보이며, 역사의 거센 물줄기 속에 남도 서민의 관념의 세계 속에서 내 면을 성찰하며, 끊임없는 근원적인 물음과 해답을 향해 지적 여행을 떠나는 것이다. 이 지상에서의 작가 자신만의 글을 통해서 독특하게 삶의 방식으로 문학적 출발도 바로 언어가 겪는 시대적 고통, 삶의 고통의 중심에서 일어 났다. 그의 삶과 시대를 근본적으로 ‘초월적 고통’으로 인식하는 세계관을 통하여 작가적 생애에서 펼쳐지는 존재론적 욕망과 같은 온전한 합일과 화 해를 향한 구원의 서정으로서 한 편의 신화(神話)가 되었다.
