As the media of communication is changed from language to digital, the concept of ‘utterance’ and ‘context’, which are the core of pragmatics research, are changing drastically. Now that the digital wave can not be reversed, this article explores how to approach digital phenomena in pragmatics. To this end, this paper will first clarify the identity of pragmatics through the comparison of pragmatics theories with syntax, and the theory of oral communication as well as the nature of pragmatics. In addition, I examined how the ‘utterance’ and ‘context’ changed in the characteristics of digital communication and clarify the tasks of pragmatics. As digital communication becomes fragmented and has a hypertext structure, the concept of ‘utterance’ must be reconstructed in pragmatics. We need to incorporate non-verbal elements into the concept of utterance, and find principles that can tie fragmented information into one utterance. Also, as digital communication takes place in cyberspace through social network, pragmatics research must find a way to actively introduce the cyber context of social network into the meaning definition of a utterance, leaving the context ‘here and now’.

소통의 매체가 언어에서 디지털로 바뀌면서 화용론 연구의 핵심인 ‘발화’ 와 ‘맥락’이 크게 변하고 있다. 디지털의 물결을 돌이킬 수 없는 지금, 이 글을 통해 화용론 연구에서 디지털 소통 현상에 어떻게 접근해야 할 것인 가를 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 먼저 화용론의 태생과 그 연구 이론에 대한 성격 규명과 아울러 화용론과 문법(syntax), 화용론과 화법의 비교 대비를 통해 화용론의 정체성을 분명히 할 것이다. 그리고 디지털 소통의 특성에서 ‘발 화’와 ‘맥락’이 어떻게 변했는지를 규명하여, 화용론 연구의 과제를 살펴보 았다. 디지털 소통이 정보를 파편화시키고, 하이퍼텍스트의 구조를 가지게 됨 에 따라 화용론 연구에서는 ‘발화’의 개념을 재구성해야 한다. 언어 외적인 요소들을 발화의 개념에 포함시켜야 하고, 파편화된 정보들을 하나의 발화 로 묶을 수 있는 원리를 찾아야 한다. 또 디지털 소통이 사회적 연결성에 의한 사이버 공간에서 이루어짐에 따라 화용론 연구에서는 지금, 여기의 맥 락을 떠나 사회적 연결성이라는 사이버 맥락을 발화의 의미 규정에 적극 도입할 수 있는 방법을 찾아야 한다.
