This paper is intended to analyze and find out the characteristics of the structure of conversations going on in group chat rooms on Kakaotalk, a mobile instant messenger which has now become the main communication tool between teenagers nowadays. With the advancement of communications technology, smartphones are widely used and mobile instant messengers have become an important communication tool in this modern society. As our teenagers nowadays also actively communicate on mobile instant messengers, there is a need for studies to be conducted on our teenagers’ communication on a mobile instant messenger. In this sense, this study intends to take the first step in understanding today’s teenagers’ communication on a mobile instant messenger by analyzing and finding out the characteristics of the structure of conversations happening on a mobile instant messenger. I conducted a questionnaire survey targeting 71 third graders at A middle school in Gwangju and only from those who agreed to the purpose of this study, I collected part of their communication that was going on in their group chat room on Kakaotalk. After that, I divided the collected contents into “beginning part, body part and concluding part” and summarized the characteristics that repeatedly appeared in each stage. The beginning part of the conversation was largely divided into four types which included “call/question/request/statement” and these types were often mixed, making it a complex conversation. In the body part, the conversations overlapped, the participants talked about several topics at the same time and they frequently changed the topics they were talking about, so one topic lasted only for a short period of time. Not only that, even when there were pauses in utterance, the topics and conversations continued to go on. As in the beginning part, in the body part as well, the phenomena, such as the overlapping of conversations, several topics going on at the same time and continuation of topics and conversations despite pauses in utterance, were often mixed, creating very complex and scattered conversations. What was characteristic of the concluding part was the conversation ended suddenly without any noticeable signals or signs of conclusion.

본 논문은 현대 청소년들의 주된 언어 소통 수단으로 자리 잡은 모바일 인스턴트 메신저 카카오톡 단체 대화방의 대화 구조를 분석하여 그 양상을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 통신 기술의 발달로 인해 스마트폰이 대중화되면서 모바일 인스턴트 메 신저는 현대 사회의 중요한 의사소통 매체로 자리매김하였다. 현대 청소년 들 역시 모바일 인스턴트 메신저를 통해 활발한 의사소통을 하고 있는 현 시점에서 우리는 청소년들의 모바일 인스턴트 메신저 소통에 대한 고찰을 해보아야할 필요성이 있다. 그러한 점에서 본 연구는 모바일 인스턴트 메신 저 대화 구조의 양상을 밝혀냄으로 현대 청소년들의 모바일 인스턴트 메신 저 소통을 이해하는 첫 걸음이 되고자 한다. 본 연구자는 광주광역시 A중학교 3학년에 재학 중인 학생 71명을 대상 으로 설문지 조사를 실시하고, 연구 목적에 동의한 학생들에 한하여 그들이 실제 이용하고 있는 카카오톡 단체 대화방의 일부 내용을 수집하였다. 그리 고 수집한 내용을 ‘시작부-중심부-종결부’의 구조로 나눈 후, 각 단계에서 반복적으로 나타나는 특징적인 양상들을 정리하였다. 시작부는 크게 ‘호출/ 질문/ 요청/ 진술’의 네 가지 유형으로 나뉘는데, 이 때 여러 유형별로 뒤섞여 나타나는 복합적인 양상을 보이기도 한다. 중심부는 대화의 중복과 동시 화제 진행이 매우 빈번하게 일어나며, 잦 은 화제 교체로 인해 화제의 지속 시간이 짧게 나타나는 것이 특징이다. 뿐 만 아니라, 발화의 휴지에도 불구하고 화제가 지속되며 대화가 전개되는 양상을 보인다. 중심부 역시 시작부와 마찬가지로 앞선 현상들이 서로 맞물려 나타나는데, 이로 인해 매우 복합적이고도 산발적인 양상으로 대화가 전개 된다. 종결부는 뚜렷한 종결의 신호나 표지 없이 갑작스러운 대화의 종결이 일 어난다는 것이 특징적이다.
