The purpose of this article is to explore the issues of spirituality and spiritual direction for Christians’ social practice. These are very difficult concepts for Christians in the reality of Korean Church. The concept of spiritual direction is new to Korean Christians who are mainly concerned about their individual and internal dimension of faith. In addition, it is not easy to openly discuss social issues in the context of Korean Church. The Christian spirituality has been traditionally emphasizing the individual and internal aspect of Christian faith. The Christians who have this type of spirituality attempt to escape from the world and instead focus on the other world after death. They believe that they are practicing the best spirituality pleased by God. This type of spirituality, however, is not a genuine Christian spirituality. Human beings cannot live out of the world and instead must engage in the world. In other words, the individual faith that has nothing to do with the social context is not a true Christian faith. If we as Christians are not concerned about the social context, our faith will be a kind of narcissism. Therefore, the concept of spiritual direction for Christians’ social practice is timely important and can give a way to renew the Korean Church. In this article, the author first deals with the concept of spirituality as a basis of spiritual direction for Christians’ social practice. Secondly, the author discusses the concept of individual spirituality and social spirituality and then studies the spirituality of liberation that was developed in Latin America. Lastly, the author discusses the experience cycle developed by Miriam Clearly for a concrete model for spiritual direction discussed in this article. In conclusion, the author summarizes what has been discussed and suggests the themes to be studied further for the Korean Christians.

본 논문의 연구목적은 그리스도인의 사회적 실천과 관련된 영성과 영성지도의 문 제를 살펴보는 데 있다. 한국교회의 현실에서 볼 때 그리스도인의 사회적 실천을 위 한 참된 영성의 형성과 영성지도란 매우 어려운 주제이다. 많은 그리스도인들이 개인 적이고 기복적인 신앙에 머물러 있는 한국 교회의 현실에서 영성지도란 개념도 생소 할 뿐 아니라 사회문제를 공개적으로 언급한다는 것 역시 어려운 문제이기 때문이다. 전통적으로 그리스도교 영성은 성령충만한 삶을 말하건 아니면 관상적 삶을 말하 건 주로 개인주의적이고 내적인 면에 치중하였다. 이런 영성은 세상으로부터의 도피 하여 내세를 바라보거나 아니면 내면에 집중하는 것이 하나님께 인정받는 최고의 신 앙생활, 즉 영성적 생활이라고 간주해 왔다. 하지만 이런 개인주의적, 현실도피적 영 성은 진정한 그리스도교적 영성이 아니다. 인간은 사회를 떠나서 살 수 없는 존재이 기 때문에 사회적 상황을 늘 고려해야만 한다. 그리고 우리가 믿는 하나님은 개인의 내면 안에서와 동시에 세상 곳곳에서 역사하시는 분이시다. 다른 말로 하자면 사회적 상황과 무관한 개인만의 신앙은 참다운 그리스도교 신앙이 될 수 없으며, 사회적 상 황을 무시할 때 신앙인들은 자칫 자아도취에 빠질 수 있다는 것이다. 이런 점에서 한 국교회에 사회적 실천을 강조하는 영성과 영성지도는 시대적으로 필요한 개념들이며, 한국교회를 갱신할 수 있는 방안 중 하나라고 생각한다. 본 논문 전반부에서는 그리스도인들의 사회적 실천과 영성지도의 근거가 되는 영 성개념을 다룬다. 먼저, 그리스도교 영성 개념의 문제를 명확히 하기 위해 영성개념을 개인적 영성과 사회적 영성의 관계 안에서 정리한다. 그리고 가난과 억압이라는 극심 한 사회적 상황에서 참된 인간해방의 의미를 묻고 실천하고자 했던 라틴 아메리카 그 리스도인들이 발전시킨 ‘해방의 영성’에 대해 살펴본다. 다음으로, 사회적 실천을 지향 하는 그리스도인들에게 요구되는 영성지도의 개념과 방향에 대해 살펴본다. 이를 위 해 본 논문에서는 미국의 영성지도자 미리암 클리어리가 개발한 ‘경험 사이클’ (experience cycle)을 그리스도인의 사회적 실천을 위한 영성지도의 실제적인 모델로 삼아 논의를 전개한다. 결론에서는 본 논문을 요약하고 앞으로 한국 그리스도인들에 게 요청되는 영성과 영성지도의 과제를 제시한다.
