How do we overcome the limits of representative democracy and realize a political system that is participated by all citizens? This paper attempts to summarize the points of discussion on the principle of mutual prosperity in Unification Thought and present alternatives through the Republican discourses which have been actively conducted recently. The principle of mutual prosperity, the political ideology of Unification Thought, can respond to the critical questions posed to Republicanism as follows: First, the theory of mutual prosperity proposes alternative electoral systems, such as election through lottery, that will allow citizens to participate in politics, and also seeks to establish collective, balanced, and responsible politics. Second, the public love in the principle of mutual prosperity cannot be cultivated through legal regulations alone. Religious education and activities are also essential to cultivate such public love. Third, the principle of mutual prosperity seeks to harmonize the purpose of the whole and individual purposes, but clearly proposes a philosophical basis that can restrict individual freedom for the sake of the community as it prioritizes the purpose of the whole over that of the individual. Fourth, the principle of mutual prosperity regards love as the core aspect of human character, explaining that public love can be cultivated through experiences of the love of children, sibling, couple, and parents within a family-oriented community. Using these answers as a starting point, the political and philosophical discussions of the principle of mutual prosperity should be made more concrete in the future.

어떻게 대의제 민주주의의 한계를 극복하고 국민이 참여하는 정치를 실현할 것 인가? 본 논문은 최근 활발하게 진행되고 있는 공화주의 담론을 통해 통일사상의 공영주의의 논의점을 정리하고 대안을 제시해보고자 하였다. 통일사상의 정치이념 인 공영주의는 공화주의에 제기되는 비판적 의문에 대해 다음과 같이 응답할 수 있 다. 첫째, 공영주의는 시민의 정치참여를 위해 추첨제 선거제도 등의 대안적 선거제 도를 제안하며 공동･균형･책임정치를 추구한다. 둘째, 공영주의의 공공애는 법적 규 제 만으로는 함양할 수 없으며 종교공동체의 교육과 활동을 통해 함양할 수 있다. 셋째, 공영주의는 전체목적과 개체목적의 조화를 추구하며 전체목적을 개체목적보 다 우선시함으로써 공동체를 위해 개인의 자유를 제한할 수 있는 철학적 근거를 명 확하게 제시하고 있다. 넷째, 공영주의는 인격의 핵심을 사랑으로 보고 가정공동체 에서 자녀･형제자매･부부･부모의 사랑을 경험함으로써 공공애를 함양할 수 있다고 설명한다. 이러한 응답을 출발점으로 공영주의의 정치철학적 논의는 향후 더욱 구체 화되어야 할 것이다.
