Since the 1960, as the society changes into a consumer society, the content and composition of novels have also changed to better meet the readers' needs. In particular, the characteristics of modern people who tend to consume anything quickly and the change of the medium have made the style of the novel shortened. Based on this idea, this study aims to verify the various theories that these social changes have influenced the style of the novel through the published works and to predict the trend of the future novel's style and apply it to the literary translation method. For this research, 18 English and American novels and 20 Korean novels were respectively divided into two groups (Group A: 1900 to 1940, Group B: 1980 to 2016) and the lengths of the sentences were compared between the two groups. The results show that the lengths of the sentences in the two groups were significantly shortened. Interestingly, the results of the quantitative research clearly support the various theories that social changes and the spread of electronic media have influenced the style of novels. According to Brian Kolb (2009), human brain changes in accordance with the medium or text format that it is often touched upon, which in turn leads to a change in behavior. Due to the plasticity of the brain, younger or future readers who frequently read short articles tend to feel burdened by long sentences. This suggests that the readability should be the top priority in the literary translation for the purpose of popularity and to enhance the readability adjustment of the length of the sentence can be considered.
