This study aims to unravel how national sports stars are reconstructed in local multimedia newspaper reports. For this purpose, the author uses Fairclough’s (1992) three-dimensional model that takes into account (1) linguistic features of a text, (2) the production and consumption of the text and (3) social practices in which the text is embedded. Texts analysed in this study are online Korean newspaper articles highlighting two Korean baseball players in the Major League Baseball. These newspaper articles contain (1) short video clips with Korean subtitles, showing American TV broadcasts of the players’ performances, and (2) body texts and headlines based on the subtitles. The articles and social situations surrounding them are analysed in three steps. First, the author describes how the Korean players are constructed in the English commentaries and Korean translations (i.e. subtitles, headlines and body texts), respectively. Findings show that there are various translational shifts that make the players look more attractive. Second, the author interprets why such shifts occurred at a particular point in time, from the perspective of news production. Third, the author explains what kinds of social relations of power may be at work behind the shifts. This study asserts that media commercialism and sports nationalism combine to make newspaper agencies reconstruct their national sports stars.
