Since the name of the local educational authority has been changed to the district office of education, the support function of the district office of education for the unit school is emphasized. However, there were many limitations in the symbolic meaning of the name to link to the actual unit school support function. In the case of unit schools, the complaints about the district office of education were voiced. In addition, the district office of education is also trying to meet the demands of change and innovation, but it is confused by its anticipated role due to limitations of realistic conditions. Based on the consciousness of this problem, the purpose of this study is to suggest what are the problems and limitations in the role of the district office of education in supporting the school site and what should be improved. In order to accomplish this purpose, this study examined the perceptions of teaching staff about the role of the district office of education and the limitations of the district office of education in performing such roles. Finally, based on the results, this study suggests direction for the district office of education to become a school field support institution.

지역교육청을 교육지원청으로 명칭을 변경하면서부터 교육지원청의 단위학교 지원 기능이 강조되 고 있다. 하지만 명칭이 지닌 상징적 의미처럼 교육지원청이 실질적으로 단위학교를 지원하는 기능 을 수행하기에는 아직 많은 한계가 있다. 단위학교 입장에서는 교육지원청에 대한 불만의 목소리가 컸으며, 교육지원청 역시 변화와 혁신의 요구에 부응하고자 노력하고 있지만 현실적 여건의 한계로 기대역할에 혼란을 겪고 있다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 본 연구는 교육지원청이 학교현장을 지 원하는 기관으로서의 역할을 수행하는데 있어 발생되는 문제점과 한계가 무엇인지, 그리고 개선해야 할 사항은 무엇인지를 제안하고자 하였다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 교육지원청의 역할이 무엇인지, 그리고 그러한 역할을 수행하는 데 있어 제약점은 무엇인지에 대한 교직원들의 인식을 살펴보았으 며, 그 결과를 바탕으로 교육지원청이 학교현장 지원 기관으로 거듭나기 위한 방향성을 제시하였
