This article explores a female protagonist’s experience, her identity transfiguration, and her subversiveness in a male-dominated Mexican society in Elena Poniatowska’s Hasta no verte, Jesús mío. Most of all, this study focuses on gender perceptions and androgyny of Jesusa Palancares, a soldadera. She does not only witness various type of oppression against women in patriarchal society of Mexico, but also she experiences extreme violence that comes from her male protector-soldier-male citizen, in short, from phallocentrism. Observing volatile women as a victim including herself, she condemns the hypocrisy and restraints imposed by social institutions. Consequently, Jesusa rejects gender norms imposed by male-centered society and she challenges gender stereotypes for survival and freedom. Making her gender ambiguous, she tries to break down barrier that limits her behavior. Performing both gender roles, Jesusa gets to realize that she can broaden her behavioral boundary enjoying diverse features a human-being can experience. She incarnates androgyny and as a result she transcends dichotomous way of dividing masculinity/femininity. Her struggle is a journey to survive, to achieve self-fulfillment and to find her true identity. This paper uses Judith Butler’s gender theory and her ‘performativity’ concept.

이 연구에서는 엘레나 뽀니아또프스까의 대표작인 『오 하느님, 당신을 볼 수 없을 때까 지』의 중심인물 헤수사(Jesusa)가 재현되는 모습을 통해 그녀의 정체성이 변화하는 모습과 그 전 복성을 분석하고자 한다. 특히 초점을 맞추고자 하는 것은 주인공 헤수사의 젠더에 대한 인식과 양성적 특성(androgyny)이다. 그녀는 남성중심적인 멕시코 전통사회에서 가부장제도에 의해 억 압당하고 휘발되는 여성들의 모습을 다양하게 경험하면서 팔루스중심적 사회가 갖는 위선과 한 계를 깨닫는다. 그 결과, 그녀는 가부장 사회가 여성에게 요구하는 젠더규범을 거부한다. 헤수사 는 전통적인 멕시코 사회에서 여성에게 요구하는 수동성, 유순함, 인내를 거부하고 때로는 성의 구별을 흐릿하게 한 채, 남성적인 것으로 간주되는 행동을 수행한다. 그리고 차츰 자신이 두 젠 더의 역할을 수행함으로써 행동의 범주를 확장하고 인간으로서 경험할 수 있는 다양한 특징을 향유할 수 있다고 인식한다. 헤수사는 성격 면에서도, 전통적으로 남성적인 면으로 여겨지는 품 성과 여성적인 면모를 두루 드러내면서 남성/여성을 이분법적으로 구분하는 세계관을 초월하고 전인격적인 모습을 드러낸다. 그녀의 행동양식은 가부장 사회에서 생존을 도모하면서 자신의 자유의지로써 제 삶을 주도적으로 이끌고 진정한 정체성을 찾아가기 위한 도정으로 읽힌다. 이 연 구를 수행하기 위해 주디스 버틀러(Judith Butler)의 젠더 이론과 수행성(performativity) 개념을 적용하였다.
