Since Spain is one of the most popular travel destinations among Koreans, recent Catalan independence movement attracted special attention and became a hot issue across many Korean media. However, due to lack of profound understanding on Spanish history and socio-political conditions of Catalonia, Korean media portrayed biased perspective in approaching the issue. Based on the prejudiced dichotomy that Spain and Madrid have been the privileged and repressive center, and, on the other hand, Catalonia and Barcelona have been the oppressed and exploited periphery, Korean TV programs and weekly magazine columns are inclined to support Catalonia’s bid for secession. Although many foreign newspapers see the Catalan issue in complex political and economic conditions adopting neutral position, Korean media tend to simplify it in good and evil. This is partly because Koreans who have long tradition of one nation-state have difficulty in understanding the complex condition of multi-nation country such as Spain. Further, Korean media, dominated by sensationalism, shows tendancy of seeing political issues in black and white. This paper, therefore, points out the misunderstanding and exaggeration of Korean Media and provides detailed and impartial explication about the independence movement of Catalonia.

스페인이 한국인들 사이에서 가장 인기 있는 여행지 중 한 곳으로 사랑받으면서 최근 카 탈루냐의 분리독립 운동은 한국 미디어에서 특별한 관심을 끌었다. 하지만 스페인 역사와 카탈 루냐의 사회·정치적 상황에 대해 충분한 이해가 없음으로 인해, 한국 미디어들은 이 이슈를 다루 면서 편향적인 관점을 보여주었다. 독자적인 정체성을 소유한 채 협력과 갈등의 역사를 거쳐 온 카스티야와 아라곤 연합왕국과의 관계를 스페인과 카탈루냐의 관계로 환원시켜, 억압적인 제국 이 독립을 원하는 소수민족을 탄압해 온 역사로 이해한 것이다. 스페인과 마드리드는 특권적인 중심이고, 카탈루냐와 바르셀로나는 수탈당한 주변이라는 이분법에 근거하여 한국의 TV 프로그 램과 주간지 칼럼들은 카탈루냐의 독립 요구를 지지하는 쪽으로 기울어 왔다. 많은 외국 언론들 이 카탈루냐 사태를 복잡한 정치, 경제적 환경 속에서 보고 있는 반면 한국 미디어들은 이것을 선과 악의 이분법으로 단순화 시키는 경향이 있다. 이것은 오래된 단일민족의 전통을 가진 한국 사람들이 스페인처럼 다민족국가의 상황을 잘 이해하지 못하기 때문일 수도 있고, 정치적 이슈 를 선악의 이분법으로 재단하길 좋아하는 한국 언론의 선정주의적 관습 때문일 수도 있다. 이 연 구는 카탈루냐 분리독립 운동에 대한 한국 미디어의 오해와 왜곡을 지적하고, 객관적인 설명을 제공하고자 한다.
