This article critically examines three discourses on the Neozapatistas struggle from the Neozapatista indigenous perspective: cyberwar, antineoliberalism and indigenous autonomy. First, the term ‘cyberwar’ contributed to attracting the global attention and to raising the enormous virtual support, which at the same time produced an adverse effect of misconceiving the real Neozapatistas struggle as a struggle in cyberspace. Second, the Neozapatistas banded together with anti-neoliberal movements to successfully establish international networks of support. It was considered a symbol of the anti-neoliberal resistance, but failed to deal with the land ownership issue that was the longcherished task of the Neozapatista indigenous. Finally, the Neozapatista autonomy, which was based on the indigenous “customs and traditions(usos y costumbres)”, in practice did not suggest an alternative modernity to the current system.
