The purpose of this paper is to examine the problem of the alternative to the neoliberal globalization that is being sought in the global South considering ‘the end of history’ as a paradigmatic transition. While the global North’s slogan that there is no alternative is losing its effectiveness, the global south argues that “the other world is possible.” What is the ‘other possible world’ presented in the global South when the Thirdworldism and postcolonial criticism of the 1980-90s can not present adequate answers? How is ‘other world possible’ different from the romantic view of pre-colonial tradition, Marxist utopia, and western-centered modernization and development if ‘another world is possible?’ Does the ‘other possible world’ not merely a resistance to neoliberal globalization but a possibility of counterhegemonic globalization? In order to find answers to these questions, Chapter 2 examines the nature of neoliberal globalization through two perspectives of modernity, and Chapter 3 analyzes transmodernity as an alternative to modernity. In the last chapter, from the viewpoint of critical utopia I will present ‘other possible world’ that are the worlds of place-based and contextualized knowledges rooted in life and history and through solidarity between them.

본 논문의 목적은 ‘역사의 종언’을 근대적 패러다임의 이행으로 보고 전 지구적 남부에 서 모색되고 있는 신자유주의 세계화에 대한 대안의 문제를 검토하는 것이다. ‘대안은 없다’는 전 지구적 북부의 신탁(神託)이 실효성을 상실하고 있는 상황에서 전 지구적 남부는 ‘다른 세계 는 가능하다’고 주장한다. 제3세계주의나 1980-1990년대의 포스트식민 비판(postcolonial criticism)이 적절한 해답이 되지 못하는 상황에서 전 지구적 남부에서 제시하는 ‘가능한 다른 세계’는 무엇인가? ‘다른 세계가 가능하다’면 ‘가능한 다른 세계’는 식민지 이전의 전통에 대한 낭만주의적 관점, 마르크스주의 유토피아, 서구중심적 근대화와 발전과 어떻게 다른가? ‘가능 한 다른 세계’는 단순히 신자유주의 세계화에 대한 저항이 아니라 대항헤게모니 세계화의 가능 성을 제시하는가? 이러한 물음에 대한 대답을 찾기 위해서 2장에서는 근대성을 바라보는 두 개의 관점을 통해 신자유주의 세계화의 본질을 살펴보고, 3장에서는 근대성에 대한 대안으로 서 트랜스모더니티 기획을 분석할 것이다. 마지막 4장에서는 삶의 터와 역사성에 뿌리를 둔 하 위주체성과 그들 사이의 연대를 통한 가능한 다른 세계의 모습을 비판적 유토피아라는 관점에 서 제시할 것이다.
