This paper investigated Yeosan Ryu Byeong-deok’s life and his research achievements in terms of Yeosan Studies. He, as a Won-Buddhist minister, served at Wonkwang University for his entire life, taking charge of educating Won-Buddhist preliminary ministers, and he was one of the persons who founded the basis of Won-Buddhist studies. He established the Research Center of Religions in 1967, and served as the first director. He started to investigate and conduct research on the circumstances surrounding new religions. His research activities were key to the important development of on-the-spot survey and general research into religious studies in Korea. He also demonstrated outstanding abilities in his work and achieved many research accomplishments such as holding academic conferences on Korean and Japanese Buddhist studies and compiling and publishing The Glossary of Won-Buddhism. Later, Yeosan’s influence reached various fields such as Won-Buddhist studies, religions studies and Korean studies around Wonkwang University. Accordingly, research about him is required as part of the systematic development of Yeosan studies, and as interpretations about his research accomplishments proceed, new but related research fields will arise.

본고는 여산학이라는 이름으로 여산 류병덕 박사의 생애와 연구업적을 살펴 본 것이다. 여산은 원불교 교역자로 일생을 원광대학교에서 봉직하면서 교역자 육성 을 담당하고, 원불교학 연구의 기틀을 연 인물의 한 분이다. 여산은 1967년 종교문제연구소를 개설하여 초대소장을 맡으면서 신종교현상 의 조사연구에 착수하였다. 이는 한국 종교학연구에 있어서 현장 조사연구라는 하나의 이정표를 제공하는 일이었다. 또한 한일불교학학술회의 개최, 『원불교사 전』 편집 발간 등 괄목할만한 활동과 연구 성과를 쌓았다. 이후 여산의 영향은 원광대학교를 중심으로 원불교학․종교학․한국학 등 여러 분 야에 미친다. 따라서 그에 관한 연구는 여산학으로서 체계적인 전개가 요청되며, 그에 따라 여산의 연구업적에 대한 해명과 함께, 관련 학문분야에도 새로운 연구의 장을 제공할 것이다.
