The central aim of this study is to recognize the importance of innovation activities of firms and to investigate its structure and characteristics. In order to conduct more systematic analysis, we classify the innovation activities into three different types, such as 1) R&D activities, 2) infrastructure of innovation activities, and 3) product innovation activities. We also adopt government policies and internal innovation factors as independent variables, in which we realize that those affect the three different types of innovation activities in the model. Moreover, we conduct a group analysis of manufacturing and service industries and then we focus on the differences and similarities of innovation activities across the two different industries. For the empirical analysis, we use the '2016 Korea Innovation Survey' by the Korea Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI). First, the findings show that while the government support has a positive impact on the both R&D activities and infrastructure of innovation activities, the government regulation has a negative impact on the all types of innovation activities of firms. Second, appropriability, which is one of the internal innovation factors in the firms, has a more impact on the R&D activities and infrastructure of innovation activities than other independent variables, and the application of intellectual property rights (IPRs) has a positive and significant impact on the R&D activities and infrastructure of innovation activities. Third, as a result of a group analysis, due to the characteristics of service industries, such as tacit and intangible product, they tend to focus on the R&D activities and product innovation activities, whereas due to the importance of production process and management, the manufacturing industries tend to focus on the infrastructure of innovation activities.

본 연구는 기업혁신활동의 중요성을 인식하고 그 구조와 특성을 파악하기 위해 혁신활동을 R&D 활동, 혁신 인프라 조성 활동, 제품혁신 활동으로 구분하여 분석을 실시하였다. 또한 각 유형별 혁신활동에 영향을 줄 것 으로 판단되는 정부정책과 기업내부 혁신요인을 독립변수로 설정하며 분석을 실시하였다. 더욱이 제조업과 서 비스업으로 구분한 집단분석을 실시하였고 이를 통해 각 산업별 특성에 따라 혁신활동이 어떤 차이점을 나타 내는지 분석하였다. 본 연구의 실증분석은 과학기술정책연구원에서 제공하는 ‘2016년도 한국기업혁신조사’의 제조업과 서비스업의 자료를 바탕으로 회귀분석을 실시하였고 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 정부지원은 기업 의 R&D 활동과 혁신 인프라 조성 활동에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 반면에 정부규제는 기업혁신활동의 모든 유형 에서 부정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 기업내부 혁신요인 중에 하나인 전유성은 다른 변수들에 비해 R&D 활동과 제품혁신 활동에 가장 큰 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났으며 지식재산권 출원은 R&D 활동과 혁신 인프라 조성 활동에는 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 서비스업의 경우 R&D 활동과 제품 혁신 활동에 집중하는 경향을 보인 반면 제조업의 경우 생산관리 및 공정의 중요성 때문에 혁신 인프라 조성 활동에 더 집중하는 경향을 보이는 것으로 나타났다.
