The Gyeongju area is divided into six zones in terms of spatial composition according to its natural and geographic environments and the distribution of its ancient tombs. The investigator reviewed the ancient tombs in the six zones and their size and combination of artifacts buried along with the deceased and found a hierarchy of total nine stages among them. The hierarchical structure went from Grade I: the central zone through Grade Ⅲ: the southern and western zone and Grade V: the northern and southeastern zone to Grade Ⅶ: the East Coast zone. There were differences in the tomb style and the quality and quantity of artifacts buried along with the deceased between the upper and lower stages of hierarchy. This hierarchical structure of ancient tombs showed different characteristics by the period. The ruling class that made wooden chamber tombs with a stone mound gradually expanded from Period 1 to Period 3 with the hierarchy of the internal structure and artifacts buried along with the deceased within their ancient tombs. In Period 3, in particular, almost every ruling class made a wooden chamber tomb with a stone mound with apparent differences according to the grades. Entering Period 4, they gradually reduced in the number of wooden chamber tombs with a stone mound, which were no longer made and disappeared in Period 5. Although it was difficult to know the exact grade of each ruling class those days based on the hierarchy of ancient tombs, the upper and lower rulers decreased and increased, respectively, from Grade A to Grade I. It seems that the status of the buried during their lifetime was reflected on their ancient tombs as it was. In addition, the distinction between the upper and lower rulers became clearer with the passage of time. There were especially huge differences in the size of ancient tombs and artifacts buried in them between the central zone of Gyeongju and its surrounding zones. The surrounding zones of Gyeongju must have been under the direct and indirect control of the central zone in the size of tombs and artifacts buried in them.
