The purpose of this study is to explore what changes can be made through multicultural contact and cultural diversity experiences in Study Abroad Program. In-depth interviews conducted with 4 teachers were studying at the graduate school in the United States. They reveal that all of the teachers never took a course on multicultural education during their pre-service teacher education and in-service training. Also, teachers with no experiences of having student with multicultural backgrounds. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: ‘Reflective self-examination on multicultural beliefs’, ‘Reflective self-examination on understanding of multicultural education’, and ‘Changes of diverse sensitivity and culturally responsive attitude’. By listening to the discourses of the individual teachers, it can be possible to understand the meaning of multicultural contact experiences in teacher multicultural education. Based on the results, this study has suggested that pre-service and in-service teacher training programs should include theoretical and practical application for multicultural education at the same time because the theory courses have only their limitations.

본 연구에서는 교사들의 다문화 접촉 및 문화다양성 경험을 바탕으로 그들의 이야기를 들어봄으로써 다문화교육에서 교사의 다문화 접촉 및 문화다양성 경험이 갖는 실제적 의미를 밝히고, 이를 바탕으로 교육적 방향을 모색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국에서 교사양성과정을 경험하고, 현재 해외대학원에서 석·박사 과정 중에 있는 교사 4명을 대상으로 반구조화 및 심층면담을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 다문화 접촉 및 문화다양성 경험을 통해 연구 참여자들이 어떠한 경험을 하며 변화의 과정을 거치는지에 대한 그 양상 및 의미는 ‘다문화신념에 대한 성찰’, ‘다문화교육 이해에 대한 성찰’, ‘다문화감수성 및 문화반응적 태도 변화’ 등으로 요약되었다. 따라서 다문화 접촉 및 문화적 다양성을 경험한 교사들의 경험 내용 및 변화의 과정과 방향에 귀 기울임으로써 다문화 접촉 경험의 교육적 의미를 이해하고, 교육적 가능성을 모색하여, 향후 체계적인 교사 교육 프로그램 개발을 위한 시사점을 제공하는데 도움이 될 것이라 기대한다.
