The purpose of this paper is to find internal and external backgrounds, and its impact for which Liú xiàng wrote Liè Nǚ Chuán. The reason for which this is important is because there are many researchers look for in Liú xiàng’s Liè Nǚ Chuán the root cause of women's fetters in traditional Chinese society. Therefore, finding out what factors in Liú xiàng’s Liè Nǚ Chuán caused these criticisms is considered very important work in philosophy. Because I think that it is expected to play a role as fǎnmiànjiàoshī(反面教師) when we develop any new theory in accordance with the needs of the times. According to this study, I was known that the direct backgrounds for which Liú xiàng wrote Liè Nǚ Chuán was is to fix the part where Zhào Fēi Yān’s sisters was loss of imperial discipline as used their beauty color. And at the same time, It is to prevent all kinds of arbitrary of relatives on the mother's side which was rely on their strength by raise the female virtues of the Empress Dowager, the queen, and the royal concubine. But when we looked deeper into the backgrounds, we found that there was another factor. In other words, there was an invisible reason for the establishment of an authoritarian political system, which was pursued by an absolute monarchy, which was formed from the last of the Warring Country period to Qin Dynasty and Han Dynasty. But to reinforce this logic, the New-Text Scholarship’s scholars of that time thought that social layer and each family as well as the emperor ought to work by a same logic. That is a unified system of governance, as it is called, which is that the imperial family-one’s hometown-the family is governed by male-dominated Emperor-Village foreman(鄕長)-Patriarch(家父長). In order to build this system, Liú xiàng planted ideal female ethics that were dreamed of by the ruling class at various places of Liè Nǚ Chuán by means of the New-Text Scholarship’s Interpretation of the scriptures, even though separated from the present. These are, so called, Sān-Cóng-Zhī-Dào(三從之道), Yì-Fū-Cóng-Shì(一夫從事), Zhēn-Jié(貞節), and the various manners imposed on women on the basis of the New-Text Scholarship’s feminine ethics. These factors which was Liú xiàng planted in his Liè Nǚ Chuán, gradually led to the yoke of women’s lives with increasing prominence to the political needs in a social and political dynamics relationship in later generations. Because authentic history’s Liè Nǚ Chuán, the Liè Nǚ Chuán’s exegetist, writers, and female literature were constructed based on the structure of Liú xiàng’s Liè Nǚ Chuán. In addition to that, because Future rulers borrowed the ways that Liú xiàng and the New-Text Scholarship’s scholars had dreamed to better govern their people. Thus, the element of chastity has become so acute that it has become a major factor in the female yoke in the days of Song dynasty, Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty.

이 논문의 목적은 유향이 『열녀전』을 짓게 된 내·외적 배경들과 그 영향을 탐구하는 것이다. 이것이 중요한 이유는 많은 연구자들이 중국 전통사회에서 여성들의 삶의 질곡을 부른 근본원인을 유향의 『열녀전』에서 찾고 있기 때문이다. 그러므로 과연 유향 『열녀전』 속의 어떠한 요소들이 이러한 비판들을 야기시켰는지를 찾는 것은 철학적으로 매우 유의미한 작업이라 생각된다. 그것이 우리로 하여금 시대의 필요에 따라 어떤 새로운 이론을 만들어낼 때 반면교사의 역할을 할 것이라 보기 때문이다. 그 연구결과 유향이 『열녀전』을 짓게 된 직접적인 배경은 조비연(趙飛燕) 자매가 그들의 미색을 이용하여 황실의 기강을 무너뜨린 것을 바로잡는 것과, 태후와 황후와 비빈들의 부덕(婦德)을 제고함으로써 그들의 세력을 업고 각종 전횡을 일삼는 외척의 준동을 막기 위한 것이었다. 그러나 그 배경을 보다 심층적으로 살펴 볼 때 또 다른 요소가 있다는 것을 발견했다. 즉 전국 말에서 진·한대에 걸쳐 형성된 대일통 전제왕국이 지향한 황제 일인 독재정치 시스템 구축이라는 보이지 않는 이유가 내재되어 있었던 것이다. 그런데 당시의 금문경학자들은 이것이 보다 강력하게 효력을 발생하기 위해서는 황제 한 사람뿐만 아니라 사회 기층이나 가정에서도 그러한 논리가 동일하게 작동해야 한다고 생각했다. 바로 황실-향리-가정이 남성중심의 황제-향장-가부장에 의해 다스려지는 일원화된 통치시스템이 그것이다. 유향은 바로 이러한 시스템을 구축하기 위해 금문학적 해경방법을 사용하여 비록 당시의 현실과는 괴리되지만 『열녀전』 곳곳에 당시 지배층들이 꿈꾸었던 이상적인 여성윤리관을 심어 놓는다. 이른바 삼종지도와 일부종사 및 정절, 그리고 바로 그러한 금문학적 여성윤리를 기반으로 하여 여성들에게 부과된 각종 예법들이 그것이다. 유향이 그의 『열녀전』 속에 심어 놓은 이러한 요소들이 후대에 사회·정치적 역학관계 속에서 그 정치적 필요에 따라 더욱 부각되면서 점차 여성들의 삶에 질곡을 야기했다고 할 수 있다. 그도 그럴 것이 후대의 정사(正史) 열녀전이나 『열녀전』의 주석가나 작자들 및 여계문학이 유향의 『열녀전』의 구조를 기본으로 삼았기 때문이다. 또 그것에 더해 후대의 통치자들이 그들의 백성에 대한 통치를 보다 효율적으로 하기 위해 유향 및 금문경학자들이 꿈꾸었던 방식을 차용해 썼기 때문이다. 그러면서 송대와 명대 및 청대가 되면 정절이라는 요소가 거의 종교적 수준으로 첨예화되어 여성 질곡의 대표적인 요인이 되었다.
