As the modern society is transformed into an interdisciplinary integrated and knowledge based society, higher education institutions such as universities have to consider new methods of delivering courses. Therefore, I examined the operation of the intensive semester conducted at A university through a qualitative case study. 22 students in department of Christian education who attended the first-year liberal arts course, ‘Community Citizenship and Field Service Project’ were participated in this study. The result findings are as follows: First, participants were able to think about their careers in relation to their major through this intensive semester; Second, participants with similar interests were able to expand their thoughts through group activities; Third, students were able to plan and organized detailed service activities through cooperation in accordance with instructional goals rather than a professor’ unilateral direction; Fourth, interaction between students strengthened their communication skills and could participate in class actively. The implications and limitations of the intensive semester were also discussed.

현대 사회가 융복합 및 지식기반 중심으로 변화되면서 고등교육 기관인 대학의 교육 환경은 교양교육에 대한 새로운 교육 방법 및 형태를 요구하고 있다. 특히 대학에서 시행되고 있는 몰입학기의 다양한 장점이 대두대면서 몰입학기는 대학교육의 다양한 방법적 변화 중 하나로 여겨지고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 2017년 A 대학교에서 실시한 몰입학기의 운영 방법과 내용을 질적사례연구를 통해 살펴보았다. 구체적으로 공동체 시민과 현장봉사 프로젝트라는 1학년 교양필수 과목을 수강한 기독교교육과 학생들을 대상으로 세 가지 영역(몰입학기, 봉사활동과 로드맵, 전반적 평가와 교육적 성과)에 따라 분석하였다. 연구 결과 A 대학교 몰입학기를 통해 운영된 공동체 시민과 현장봉사 프로젝트 수업은 기독교교육과 학생들에게 봉사활동과 자신의 전공을 연계해주는 의미 있는 교양수업으로 전공과 관련하여 진로에 대한 고민을 미리 할 수 있던 점, 비슷한 관심과 진로에 대한 고민을 하는 학생들이 모둠활동을 통해 자신의 생각을 확장시킬 수 있었던 점, 교수자의 일방적 지시나 리드가 아닌 수업 목표에 맞게 학생들이 세부적 봉사활동을 기획할 수 있었던 점, 그리고 학생들 사이의 상호작용이 의사소통 역량을 강화하여 적극적 수업 참여를 할 수 있었던 점 등이 긍정적인 교육성과로 평가되었다. 본 연구결과를 바탕으로 추후 몰입학기가 대학 교양수업의 다변화를 모색하는 하나의 대안이 되길 기대해 본다.
