This paper aims to answer criticisms of my hypothesis that single line ondol, a unique heating system in Korea, in Chungdo-style settlements has a domestic origin. In particular, this paper pays attention to the competing hypothesis that the single line ondol has an external origin, and replaced the existing heating system after the single line ondol was adopted in the Chungdo-style settlement. First, the paper explores why researchers have different understandings of variation in the form of single line ondol and argues that the different assumptions in chronology, locality, and type of the ondol led to the different understandings. Accordingly, the paper critically examined the external origin hypothesis in terms of the three aspects of assumptions regarding the single line ondol: chronology, locality, and type. Second, the paper applies the same line of examination to the domestic origin hypothesis of the single line ondol. Examination of the temporal proximity, spatial overlap, and structural similarity shows that the variation in form reflects temporal variation rather than variation in affiliation. It is concluded that the external origin hypothesis is based on the temporal events from historical documents and the resulting changes in material culture without a specific proposal of an origin point.

본 논문은 필자의 중도식 주거 외줄구들의 단일기원설에 대한 여러 비판들에 답하기 위하여 작성되었다. 특히 최초의 외줄구들이 중도식 주거에 채용된 이후에 외부로부터 계통을 달리 하는 외줄구들이 기존 외줄구들을 대체했다는 다원기원설을 반박하는데 중점을 두었다. 먼저 연구자에 따라 외줄구들의 형태 변이에 대하여 이해를 달리 하는 근본 원인에 대하여 살펴보았는데, 대개는 외줄구들에 대한 편년과 지역성, 그리고 외줄구들 형식에 대한 인식 차이에서 비롯되었다. 따라서 외줄구들과 관련된 세 가지 내용을 중심으로 다원기원설을 비판적으로 검토하였다. 또한 외줄구들 단일기원설 역시 동일한 내용으로 살펴보았는데, 외줄구들의 시간적 근접성, 공간적 중복성, 그리고 구조적 유사성을 검토한 결과 외줄구들의 형태 변이는 계통이 아닌 시간 차이를 반영한 것으로 보았다. 이를 통해 다원기원설이 외줄구들의 외부 기원지를 특정하지 못하면서 문헌의 역사적 사건과 그로 인한 물질문화 변동 현상에 기대어 주장된 것임을 알 수 있었다
