In this article, we will note that two opposing views, namely, universalism and cultural relativism, are revealed in The Theory of Moral Sentiments written by Adam Smith. He presents in the same writing, the universal moral principles from the philosophical point of view on one hand, and the relativity of moral principles based on culture from a sociological point of view on the other hand. How can we understand the claim of two opposing views in the work? This article will ultimately answer this question. To this end, I explore the impartial spectator which means the standard of morality or the moral principle in Smith's thought. First, I deal with how the impartial spectator in The Theory of Moral Sentiments can be understood in terms of universalism and cultural relativism. And I focus on how Smith's ethical thought, which contains two conflicting perspectives, should be synthesized.

이 글에서는, 아담 스미스의 『도덕감정론』에서 보편주의와 문화 상대주의가 함께 드러나고 있음에 주목한다. 스미스는 동일한 저작을 통해, 한편 전통 철학적 관점에서 보편적인 도덕원리를 제시하는 동시에, 또 다른 한편 사회학적 관점에서 문화에 따른 도덕원리들의 상대성을 다뤘다. 한 저작에서 서로 대립되는 두 관점의 주장을 내세우는 것을 어떻게 이해해야 할까? 본고에서는 궁극적으로이 질문에 답을 구하고자 한다. 이를 위해 필자는 스미스의 윤리사상에서 도덕성의 기준 또는 도덕원리를 뜻하는 공정한 관망자를 중심으로 탐구할 것이다. 우선 공정한 관망자가 『도덕감정론』에서, 보편주의의 관점 그리고 문화 상대주의의 관점으로 각각 어떻게 이해될 수 있을지 다룰 것이다. 그리고 상충되는 두 관점을 내포하는 스미스의 윤리사상이 어떻게 종합되어야 할지에 대해 고심하겠다.
