National Park is a place where the wild nature coexists with a unique local culture. As a Korean traditional utopia, Jirisan Cheonghakdong can be an iconic place which best represents the placeness of Korean National Park. Buril waterfall area, Sanggesa Temple and Sinheung-dong Village are shown as most talked-about Cheonghak-dong in travel notes written by the ancient people. However, some of the placeness of these areas have been damaged by indiscriminate development. Therefore, we tried to define the place identity and place image of above mentioned places, and to suggest the way of enhancing the place image to improve the placeness of that area according to the historial records in the ancient travel notes. Strengthening the place image is to preserve and restore the originality of each places, and is to enhance the naturalness and mystique of landscape elements, and is to minimized the artificiality and landscapedegradation ‘Landscape Improvement Plan’ is needed to restore or recreate the placeness where its place identity has been lost as a Cheonghak-dong. And it is needed to remove the artificial elements of the cultural landscapes and construct the traditional gardens in that places. And it is needed to draw a ‘landscape restoration picture’ to restore the scenary of Sinheung-dong Village, and to rebuild the Hongyukyo bridge and Neungpagak pavilion on it’s bridge. In order to stimulate the local economy and local renaissance by these ‘place improvement projects’, the followings are required. 1. List some cultural landscape elements of Cheonghak-dong as ‘State-designated Cultural Asset’ or cultural resources of National Park. 2. Establish and implement a ‘Landscape Improvement Plan’ of entrance area of the Ssangyesa Temple and Shinheung-dong Village. 3. Establish a cooperative system in which all interested groups and peoples participate to rebuild the ‘Cheonghak-dong cultural landscape’. 4. Promote systematic and strategic place marketing.

국립공원은 야생적인 자연의 세계에 향토적인 문화가 존재하는 장소임을 감안할 때 그런 국립공원의 장소 성이 가장 잘 표현된 곳이 지리산 청학동이라고 할 수 있다. 옛사람들의 유람록에서 불일폭포-불일암 일원, 쌍계사, 신흥마을 일원을 청학동이라고 가장 많이 언급하고 있다. 그러나 이들 지역 중 일부는 무분별한 개발에 의해 청학 동으로서의 장소성이 심각하게 훼손되어 있다. 이에 따라 이 연구에서는 유람록의 기록을 토대로 위 3개 장소에 대한 장소정체성과 장소이미지를 규명하고, 장소성을 증진시키기 위한 장소이미지 강화방안을 제시하였다. 장소이미 지의 강화는 각 장소들을 본래의 원형에 가깝게 보존하고, 각 경관요소들의 자연성과 신비감을 높이며, 인공성과 경관저해성을 최소화 하는 것이다. ‘경관개선계획’을 수립하여 청학동에 걸맞는 장소이미지를 재창출하고, 주요 문화 경관 주변의 인공시설을 정비하여 전통정원을 조성하며, 경관복원도 제작과 홍류교와 능파각의 복원이 필요하다. 이러 한 장소만들기 사업이 지역경제를 활성화하고 지역부흥으로 이어지려면 다음과 같은 사항이 필요하다. 1. 청학동의 주요 문화경관을 문화재 또는 국립공원 문화자원으로 등재. 2. 쌍계사 입구, 신흥마을 일원에 대한 종합적인 경관개 선계획을 수립·시행. 3. ‘청학동 재현하기’를 위하여 모든 이해관계자가 참여하는 협치시스템 구축. 4. 체계적인 장 소마케팅 전략을 추진.
