The purpose of this paper is to examine the meaning and origins of hadamotae by looking at various phrases including -daga motae. -daga motae is a construction that shows various aspects in the spectrum of lexicalization. In this paper, we try to describe the characteristics of hadamotae more specifically by examining the overall characteristics of -daga motae. And to discuss the origins of hadamotae, I will also examine the construction of hʌdaga motʌya in Middle and Modern Korean literature. This paper discusses the background and process in which hʌdaga motʌya could be an adverb by paying attention to the construction of hʌdaga motʌya which can be interpreted as adverbial. Through this, we can have a deep understanding of the sentences consisting of hadamotae and also observe one aspect of the process of the construction consisting of a connective ending into an adverb.

본고는 ‘-다(가) 못해’를 포함하고 있는 여러 구문을 살피고, 그 중에서 특히 ‘하다못해’에 주목함으로써 ‘하다못해’의 의미와 기원을 고찰한 것이다. ‘하다못해’는 ‘-다못해’를 포함하고 있지만 연결어미 구성인 ‘-다(가) 못해’가 이루는 구문과는 꽤 다른 성격의 구문을 이룬다. 본고는 ‘하다못해’의 이와 같은 특성에 주목하여 ‘하다못해’의 통사․의미적 특성을 구체적으로 기술하였다. 그리고 ‘하다못해’의 기원을 논하기 위해 중세 및 근세한국어 자료에 나타나는 ‘ᄒᆞ다가 몯ᄒᆞ야’ 구성을 고찰하였으며, 부사로도 해석이 가능한 ‘ᄒᆞ다가 못ᄒᆞ여’에 주목함으로써 이것이 어휘화될 수 있었던 배경과 그 과정을 논하였다.
