The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of optimism in the relation between perceived social support and academic failure tolerance of the upper graders of elementary school. For this research, tests on perceived social support, academic failure tolerance, and optimism were carried out involving 355 children in the fifth and sixth grades of 3 elementary schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi. Correlation analysis was performed in order to examine the relationship among the variables, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted to investigate the mediating effect. The results were as follows. Firstly, there was a statistically positive correlation between perceived social support and optimism. In addition, optimistic children tended to be resistant to academic failure and there was a statistically positive relationship between social support and the sub-factors of academic failure tolerance. Secondly, the result of the hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that children’s optimism had significant mediating effects on the relationship between perceived social support and academic failure tolerance. Based on these findings, the implications and limitations of the current study were described.

이 연구는 초등학교 고학년 아동이 지각한 사회적 지지와 학업적 실패내성의 관계에서 낙관성이 매개효과를 가지는지 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 서울과 경기지역 3개 초등학교에 재학 중인 5,6학년 355명의 학생들을 대상으로 아동이 지각한 사회적 지지, 학업적 실패내성, 낙관성을 측정하는 설문조사를 실시하였다. 변인들 간의 관계는 상관분석을 통해 살펴보았으며, 지각된 사회적 지지와 학업적 실패내성의 관계에서 낙관성의 매개효과를 알아보기 위해 위계적 중다회귀분석을 활용하였다. 연구결과 사회적 지지와 낙관성, 낙관성과 학업적 실패내성은 유의미한 정적 상관이 있는 것으로 나타났고, 사회적 지지와 학업적 실패내성의 하위요인들 역시 부모지지와 감정의 관계를 제외하면 모두 유의미한 정적 상관을 보였다. 또한 낙관성은 초등학교 고학년이 지각한 사회적 지지와 학업적 실패내성의 관계를 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 이 연구의 결과에 대한 의의, 연구의 제한점 및 후속 연구를 위한 제언이 기술되었다.
