As is generally known, ever since the liberation from Japan, many Korean people have been deeply influenced by the pseudo-religious dogma called the ‘anticommunism’ and its extension, the pseudo-McCarthyist propaganda of the extreme-rightist political forces. Lee Younghee(1929~2010) was a representative of political enlighteners in the turbulent period of Korean modern history who by his pen struggled against the antidemocratic mass manipulations of the kind. He applied a scalpel of sharp criticism to the blind anticommunism and pro-American tendency which had ever obstructed the development of the Korean democracy and revealed that the both are nothing but the ‘idols of the Cold War era.’ And because of this, he used to be a main target of the political censorship of the military dictatorship all his life long. By the way, the original motive of his ideology criticism of the kind is known to have been formed just as he had experienced the tragedy of fratricidal Korean War as a junior officer. His war trauma of that time might have made him devote himself to the struggle against the irrationality of Korean anticommunism. But how could we revalue his lifelong stubborn struggle of the sort in the present Korean society where the anticommunist idol in question is still well? With this critical mind I outlined how his experience of the Korean War had influenced on the ripening of his pacifistic self-identity and critically looked back on his lifelong struggle against the anticommunist idol in this essay. As a result, I reached the first conclusion that his most important achievement is his courageous revealing that the blind anticommunism and pro-American tendency of the Korean conservatives were together formed under the inevitable influence of the American postwar policy of the Cold War and that the both have ever functioned as the discursive powers which justify the destruction of democracy and the violation of basic human rights by the conservative ruling cliques. And then, I reached the second conclusion that he deserves to be an ideological forerunner who has greatly helped the Korean people to strengthen their democratic capacity in that thanks to his ideological struggle, his challenging belief of those days in liberal democracy turned into the public commonsensical belief today.

주지하다시피 해방 이후의 한국 사회는 시기별로 정도의 차이는 있을지라도 대개는‘반공주의’란 이름의 유사 종교적 도그마와 그것의 연장선에 놓인 극우 정치 세력의 유사매카시즘 선동이 대중에게 지대한 영향력을 발휘해 온 사회였다. 리영희(1929~2010) 는 그러한 반민주적 대중 조작에 비판적 문필로 맞서며 저항한 격동기의 대표적인 정치적·문화적 계몽가였다. 그는 한국의 민주주의 발전을 저해하는 맹목적 반공주의와 숭미의식에 메스를 가하여 그러한 것들이 ‘냉전 시대의 우상’에 기인한 것임을 검질기게 폭로해 나갔고, 이 때문에 군사독재 사찰기관의 주요 표적이 되어 체포와 투옥을 밥먹듯당하는 형극의 세월을 겪어야 했다. 그런데 그러한 이데올로기 비판의 원초적 동기는 그가 약관의 초급 장교로 참전한한국 전쟁에서 동족상잔의 참상을 목격한 때부터 형성된 것으로 알려져 있다. 지리산의전장에서 받은 윤리적 충격이 그로 하여금 한국적 반공주의의 비이성과 싸우는 우상파괴의 형로(荊路)에 스스로를 내던지게 한 것이다. 그러나 문제의 반공주의 우상이 여전히 건재한 지금의 한국 사회에서 우리는 그 우상과 집요히 맞섰던 리영희의 인생 역정을 어떻게 재평가하고 의미화해야 할까? 이러한 문제의식 아래 필자는 본고에서 리영희의 한국 전쟁 체험이 그의 반전주의적·평화주의적 정체감 형성에 미친 영향을 개설하고여기에서 비롯된 그의 반공주의 우상 파괴 작업을 비판적으로 회고해 보았다. 리영희의가장 큰 업적은 한국 보수 세력의 맹목적 반공주의와 숭미 의식이 해방 후 미국 냉전정책의 불가피한 영향 아래 동반 형성된 사실과 그것이 지금껏 보수적 집권층의 민주주의 파괴와 인권 억압을 정당화하는 담론 권력으로 기능해 온 사실을 용기 있게 밝혀낸데 있다고 생각된다. 나아가 그는 그러한 우상 파괴 작업을 통해 그의 생전엔 저항의칼끝이던 민주주의에 대한 신념을 이 시대의 평범한 양식(良識)으로 만들었단 점에서한국민의 민주적 역량 강화에 묵직이 기여한 선각자로도 평가될 수 있다고 생각된다.
