This study presents a new perspective on the relationship between alliance portfolio diversity and organizational search behavior on firm innovation performance through a contingency approach. Using data on the alliance portfolio and patent activities of 124 US manufacturing firms, the diversity of alliance portfolio is positively associated with firm innovation performance when pursuing ambidextrous directions with organizational search behavior. Specifically, in the case of an organization seeking exploitative search, the higher the alliance portfolio diversity, the higher the innovation performance of the firm. Conversely, organizations seeking exploratory search can increase innovation performance as the alliance portfolio diversity is lower. Industrial volatility has been shown to moderate the effects of alliance portfolio diversity on innovation performance in both cases of explorative and exploitative search of organization.
