Under the persecution of Diocletian, confessors and traditores appeared in North Africa, and because of this matter the North African church was divided. This church schism made it possible to develop diverse understandings of the church through the Donatists and the Catholics as well. Especially while Parmenianus pursued to include the schismastics in the Donatist Church, since then, the Donatist doctrine of the Church has been changed to include sinners in the Church. In this point, diverse understandings of the Church began to appear such as Parmenianus and Tyconius’s, which particularly influenced Augustine greatly. Moreover, within the Donatist Church, there were the concepts of the use of coercion of secular authority, of rebaptism of those about whom return from schism, and of Tyconius’s understanding of the Church, which became Augustine’s logical device to debate the Donatists as well as influenced him. Those concepts of the Church, the use of coercion, and the matter of rebaptism were already present in North Africa culture before Augustine utilized them. In this sense, this article examines Augustine’s theological concepts of the Church, rebaptism, and the use of coercion were influenced by North Africa’s cultural theology.

디오클레니아누스 황제의 박해로 인해 북아프리카에서 고백자와 배교자가 발 생했고, 이로 인해 교회의 분열이 시작되었다. 이러한 교회의 분열은 북아프리 카교회에서 도나투스파와 가톨릭교회 모두를 통해 교회론에 대한 해석의 다양 성을 불러왔고, 이를 기초로 다양한 신학들이 발전했다. 특히 파르메니아누스가 북아프리카 내의 분파들을 수용하는 포용적인 신학을 추구하면서 그와 함께 나 타나게 되는 도나투스파 내의 다양한 신학적 발전과 변화들은 아우구스티누스 에게 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 특별히 티코니우스의 교회론과 도나투스파의 강압 을 사용하는 문제, 그리고 도나투스파 내의 분파들로부터 북아프리카교회로 돌 아오는 사람들에게 관한 재세례의 문제 등은 아우구스티누스에게 영향을 주었 을 뿐만 아니라 도나투스파를 논박하는 논점들이 되었다. 아우구스티누스의 교 회론과 성례론, 그리고 세속권력의 강압의 사용 등은 북아프리카 내에서 이미 통용되었던 문화 혹은 문화신학이었던 것이다. 이런 점에서 아우구스티누스의 신학적 개념들은 북아프리카의 역사적 상황 속에서 도나투스파의 영향을 받아 발전한 것들이었다. 그래서 이 논문은 그의 교회론, 세례에 관한 그의 이해, 그 리고 세속권력의 강제적 힘의 사용 등은 북아프리카교회에서 다양하게 현존했 었던 개념들에서 발전하고 정제된 것이었다는 것을 검토한다.
