This article explores Gestalt Psychology application to facilitate healing of pastors. The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him(Gen. 2:18).”As said in this verse, Fredrick S. Perls(1893~1970), the founder of Gestalt Psychology, argued the survival ratio of persons who live without anyone’s support is very low. He emphasized that, as human needs food and water for basic survival, everyone in a psychological way needs contacts with others for survival. Furthermore, he stated that human wants to group with others and that people’s desire to identify with groups is a psychological survival one. In Gestalt Psychology, healing takes place through here & now experiences in the relationships with counselors and patients and with group members, not through individual psycological analysis practiced in the Psychoanalysis Psychology. This researcher proceeded this article with the presumption that the aforementioned attribute of Gestalt Psychology can affect healthy healing of pastors and congregations. Gestalt Psychology is one of the most actively utilized method of psychological healing in USA, Europe, Republic of South Africa, and South-Eastern Asian region, and is appropriate for treating pastors especially because it deeply deals with spiritual aspects as well as psychological. Through clinical practices, the author experienced positive outcomes while applying Gestalt Psychology to many pastors who had been afflicted by perpetual stress caused by excessive tasks of pastors. The couseling goal based on Gestalt Psychology is to help pastors to overcome past scars and anxieties about future, and to savor the grace here & now. This article tries to review, reflecting the experiences in clinical practices, Gestalt Psychology in the following context as a mean of the care of pastors for pastor healing. First, the author tries to review basic concepts of Gestalt Psychology applicable to the care of pastors and then to shed new light by reflecting Gestalt Psychology on the life of Martin Luther as one of the most important pastoral caretaker in the history of Christianity. The ultimate goal of the article is to provide aid to apply Gestalt Psychology to pastoral field with the perspective of spiritual growth of pastors.

본 논문은 목회자의 치유를 돕기 위한 게슈탈트 심리학의 적용에 관한 글이다. 하나님께서는 태초에 “사람이 혼자 사는 것이 좋지 아니하니 내가 그를 위하여 돕는 배필을 지으리라 하시리라”(창2:18)고 말씀하셨다. 이 말씀처럼 게슈탈트 심리학(Gestalt Psychology)의 창시자인 프리츠 펄스(Fritz Perls, 1893〜1970)도 누군가의 도움 없이 혼자 살아가는 사람의 생존율은 매우 낮다고 주장하였다. 그는 인간이 기본적으로 생존하려면 음식과 물이 있어야 하듯이 심리적 수준에서는 타인과 접촉이 있어야만 생존할 수 있다고 강조하였다. 이렇듯 게슈탈트 심리학에서는 정신분석 심리학처럼 개인 심리내적 분석만이 아닌 상담자와 내담자의 관계, 또는 집단 구성원들간의 관계 경험을 통해 치유가 일어난다고 본다. 본 연구자는 위와 같은 게슈탈트 심리학의 특징이 목회자의 치유와 나아가서는 교회 공동체의 건강한 회복에도 영향력을 끼칠 수 있다는 전제하에 본 연구를 진행하였다. 게슈탈트 심리학은 미국과 유럽, 남아공화국과 동남아까지 현재 가장 활발하게 임상현장에서 활용되고 있는 심리 치유의 한 방법이다. 특히 심리적인 문제뿐만 아니라 영적인 문제까지 깊이 연구되어지고 있는 심리학 분야이기에 목회자에게 적용하기에 적절하다고 본다. 상담현장에서 연구자는 목회사역으로 인한 끊임없는 스트레스로 지친 목회자들에게 게슈탈트 심리학을 적용해 본 결과 긍정적인 치유 효과를 경험하였다. 게슈탈트 심리학에 입각한 연구자의 상담목표는 목회자들이 과거의 상처와 미래의 염려에 억눌려 있기 보다는 지금-여기(Here & Now)에서 현재의 은혜를 누릴 수 있는 자들이 되도록 돕는 것이었다. 이러한 임상경험 결과를 토대로 본고에서는 목회자의 치유를 위해 실행되어야 할 목회상담의 한 방법인 게슈탈트 심리학을 다음과 같은 구성으로 고찰해 보고자 한다. 먼저 목회자에게 적용될 수 있는 게슈탈트 심리학의 주요개념에 대한 설명을 한 후 기독교 역사에서 가장 중요한 목회적 돌봄자 중 한 사람이었던 마르틴 루터(Martin Luther)를 사례로 그의 삶을 게슈탈트 심리학에 기대어 재조명해 보고자 한다. 마지막으로는 목회자를 위한 영적 성장의 관점에서 게슈탈트 심리학을 적용하여 사역 현장에 도움을 주고자 함이 본 연구의 목적이다.
