The purpose of this study is to investigate the tendency of coverage about ‘Political Fund Act’ shown in the reports of central daily newspapers in July, 2018. Authors tried to find out if there is a kind of difference in the coverage tendency in dealing with this issue between representative conservative newspapers such as Chosun Ilbo and Dong-A Ilbo, and progressive newspapers including Kyung Hyang newspaper and Hankyorhe shinmun. The research problem was whether there was a difference in coverage tendency in the articles with regard to this issue, which was analyzed through news volume, article type, frame, and tone. The finding was as follows. First the news coverage of the ‘political fund law’ of the four newspapers is slightly ahead of the conservative media in the press coverage. Second. it was found that the progressive media was dealing with the issue in various forms of article such as planning, editorial, and commentary articles, compared to conservative media with many straight articles. Third, as a result from frame analysis, both ‘progressive’ and ‘conservative’ newspapers similarly covered the cases violating political fund acts through situation frame in the first period, while two newspapers showed definitely different positions in the second period. Forth, the progressive media showed greater interest in the controversy over surrounding the political fund law issue than the conservative media, urging revision. Fifth, overall, ‘political fund law’ gained more interest in the progressive than the conservative media. This study confirmed the difference in the tendency of coverage by conservative and progressive media. It is somewhat unfortunate that there is a lack of interest in political funds law in the press release. It seems that active reporting is needed through more objective and professional analysis. This study can be meaningful as the first attempt to examine the conservative and progressive news reports of the ‘political fund law’. We look forward to a more in-depth follow-up study.

본 연구는 2018년 7월에 보도된 ‘정치자금법’ 관련 중앙일간지 기사에 나타난 보도경 향을 연구하는 데 목적이 있다. 고 노회찬 의원의 사망사건이 발생한 2018년 7월 23일을 기점으로 그 이전 시기에는 일명 ‘드루킹사건’과 관련되어 정치자금법에 대한 보도가 이 루어졌다면, 7월 23일부터는 고 노회찬의원의 사망에 따라 ‘정치자금법’에 대한 여러 논 의들이 이루어졌는데, 이 시기의 ‘정치자금법’에 대한 보도경향을 살펴보는 것은 큰 의의 를 갖는다. 본 연구에서는 보도량, 기사유형, 프레임, 논조에서 보도경향의 차이가 나타 나는가를 대표적인 보수언론인 <조선일보>, <동아일보>와 진보언론인 <경향신문>, <한 겨레신문>을 비교 분석하여 살펴보았다. 첫째, 4개 신문사의 ‘정치자금법’ 키워드의 기사 보도량은 진보언론이 보수언론보다 조금 더 많았다. 둘째, 기사유형별로는 보수언론은 스트레이트형 기사가 많은 반면 진보언론은 기획, 사설, 해설기사 등 다양한 형태의 기 사유형을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 프레임분석에서는, 1기에는 진보와 보수언론 모두 정황프레임 등을 통해 정치자금법 위반 사례에 대한 보도를 하고 있으나, 2기에는 진보와 보수언론의 입장이 확연히 다르게 나타났다. 넷째, 기사의 논조를 보면, 보수언 론에 비해 진보언론이 정치자금법 논란에 크게 관심을 보이고 개정을 촉구하였다. 다섯 째, 전반적으로 ‘정치자금법’에 대해서는 보수언론보다 진보언론에서 더 큰 관심을 갖고 보도하였다. 이러한 연구결과를 통해 보수와 진보언론사의 보도경향에 나타나는 차이를 확인할 수 있었다. 다소 아쉬운 점은 정치자금법에 대한 국민적 관심을 이끌어내기에 보 도량이 부족한 것이었다. 보다 객관적이고 전문적인 분석을 통한 적극적인 보도가 필요 해 보인다. 본 연구는 ‘정치자금법’에 대한 보수와 진보 언론사의 보도경향을 알아보는 첫 시도로서 의의를 갖는다. 앞으로 좀 더 깊이 있는 후속연구가 나오기를 기대한다.
