This study investigates a modern Buddhist magazine, Geumgangjeo (Vajra) to examine the awareness of the reality in Joseon Buddhist students studying abroad in Japan. For this purpose, this study discusses the magazine articles on the Surveys of Japanese Buddhism, Scholars’ conventions and Joseon Monks’ Conferences written in the late 1920s. These writings reveal the awareness of the reality in contributions to Geumgangjeo. These contributions proposed inexorable criticism of the present status of Buddhism in Joseon, new reforms and theories of reform for the revival of Joseon Buddhism. Regarding the situations of Japanese religion, such as Japanese Buddhist studies and laws on religious groups, they introduced Joseon Buddhism better than Japanese Buddhism. And yet, in the publication of Geumgangjeo, financial problem and a sense of alienation from Buddhism in Joseon were other modern experiences Joseon Buddhist students in Japan as the colonized people living in the metropole. The modern medium, Geumgangjeo was the only space for comments in which modern agony felt by Joseon Buddhist students in Japan as they experienced the gap between the colony and the empire were expressed through a modern product, ‘Joseon Buddhism,’ which was so called another aspect of ‘Joseon Buddhism.’

본 연구는 근대 불교잡지에 나타난 재일조선불교유학생의 현실인식을 살펴보기 위해 『금강저』라는 근대 불교잡지를 검토한 것이다. 이를 위해 『금강저』의 기고문 중 그들의 현실인식을 잘 드러내고 있다고 판단되는 1920년대 후반에 전개된 일본불교시찰, 학인대회, 조선승려대회의 내용을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 이들 기고문에서는 조선불교계 현황에 대한 거침없는 비판과 조선불교 부흥을 위한 새로운 개혁, 혁신론이 제안되기도 하였다. 이럴 경우, 일본불교학, 종교단체법과 같은 일본종교의 상황을 참고하면서 이보다 나은 조선불교를 상정 하였다. 하지만 『금강저』 간행에 있어 경제적 어려움과 조선불교계로부터의 소외감은 재일조선불교유학생이 느끼는 제국의 땅에서 경험하는 식민지민으로서의 또 다른 근대적 경험이었다. 이처럼 『금강저』라는 근대적 매체는 재일조선불교유학생들의 식민지와 제국 틈새의 근대적 고뇌가 ‘조선불교’라는 근대적 산물을 통해 표출되는 유일한 언설공간으로, 이른바 제국에서의 ‘조선불교’의 또 다른 모습이었던 것이다.
