The Distribution of Hangul Correspondence Documents between Japan and Korea during the Edo Period
초록
영어
In this study, a list of Hangul correspondence documents which went back and forth between Korea and Japan during the Edo and early Meiji period are introduced. The corresponding distribution was then analyzed. Such Hangul correspondence documents between Korea and Japan are different compared to the existing domestic Hangul correspondences of the times. These differ from the known data in that both the sender and the receiver are both males and the documents contain official diplomatic content. Although the use of Hangul in official documents began around the era of the Gabo Reform of 1894 in Korea, the Hangul correspondence documents between Joseson era Korea and Japan, already showed the official properties from around the mid-18th century. This is a phenomenon which occurred in a special space called the Joseon-Japan transmission and the background of such a phenomenon is estimated to have been based on several factors. Factors such as the loss of the Japanese linguistic ability by government officials related to Japanese studies (who were working at translation government offices during the Joseon Dynasty). Other significant factors include the acquisition of Korean linguistic abilities by Japanese translation officials and the lack of Chinese linguistic abilities.
