초록

영어

The 1960’s brought forth an era of rock music to countries such as Korea and Japan, whose popular culture was heavily influenced by the United States. In the following decade of the 1970’s, both countries were subsequently influenced by the emerging heavy metal scene of western countries. However, there were contrasting methods and periods in which metal music entered the cultures of both countries. This study seeks to understand the processes by which the heavy metal genre was accepted and spread in Korean and Japanese culture, as well as the transformations that the genre underwent. The analysis in this study was performed by selecting bands that were active from the 1980’s to the 90’s—when heavy metal was popular—and comparing the transformations in instrumental layout, harmonies and melodies between the bands. The results found that Korea’s first heavy metal bands changed in musical style based on era and characteristically released new rock ballad songs frequently when compared to Japanese heavy metal bands, which did not adapt their songs to eras and maintained their styles. Such contrasts between the two countries can be seem as an aspect that illustrates the differences in their culture. From the 1960’s—when rock music was first introduced to Japan—there had been debates over whether rock songs should be sung in English to maintain the genre’s characteristics or reinterpreted to the native language of the country in which it is played. While such efforts to preserve the musical characteristics of rock music reflected the Japanese heavy metal scene of the 1980’s and influenced the analytical results of this study, Korean heavy metal bands focused more on the mainstream popularization of the genre, causing frequent member rotations in bands and making it difficult to maintain the musical characteristics. There were likely a variety of additional factors correlating with the introduction and establishment of rock and heavy metal music in both countries, including the time period, size of their record industries, and cultural differences. This study, however, focuses mainly on identifying the musical differences before any other factors. The findings in this study regarding the musical and cultural differences between Korea and Japan propose and open up new directions for future research into the factors that influenced the contrasting paths that rock music took in both countries.
