The purpose of this study is understanding the concept of overlapping and examining the characteristics of overlapping forms in contemporary ceramics. Rudolf Arnheim, a german art psychologist, stated that an overlap makes the relations between objects stronger and creates various formative alterations. An intimate union of overlapped forms leads to structural effects; the constant repetition creates continuity and rhythm, which provides time elements to the fixed scene. From this pattern, the viewers perceive not only the spatial features such as depth and movement, but also the infinity of the world. In this study, various cases of overlapping in contemporary ceramics were sorted into three basic categories in order to examine the features of overlapping as a visual language. First, the works of Nuala O'Donovan and Lauren Nauman are composed of overlaps of linear features. Second, Rudolf Staffel and Moriyama Kanjiro applied planar elements to their art. Finally, Matthew Chambers and Kamei Yoichiro implemented spatial elements. From this result, it is confirmed that the overlapping of forms performs the role as a visual language with extensity, integration, repeatability, continuity and so on in contemporary ceramic art. Thus, this study is meaningful that it identifies the possibility of expanding the formativeness of contemporary ceramic art through the overlapping of forms.

본 연구는 중첩의 개념과 조형적 특성을 이해하고 현대 도예 작품 속에 나타나는 형의 중첩을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 독일의 예술심리학자인 루돌프 아른하임은 중첩이 형태 간의 관계를 더욱 긴밀하게 만들며 조형적으로는 다양한 변화를 이끌어내는 방법이 된다고 하였다. 중첩으로 형성된 형태 간의 긴밀한 결합은 구조적인 효과를 내며 일정한 반복 속에서 연속성을 부여하고 리듬감을 형성하며 부동의 화면에서 시간적 요소를 개입시킨다. 이는 관람자로 하여금 공간적 깊이감을 느끼도록 하여 시각적으로 공간의 유동성을 형성하며 무한함을 느끼도록 유도한다. 본 연구에서는 현대 도예 작품 중 형의중첩이 나타나는 사례를 형태의 기본적 분류에 따라 나누어 사례 연구하였다. 선형요소의 중첩을 이용한 누알라 도노반과 로렌 나우만, 면형요소의 중첩을 이용한 루돌프 스타펠과 모리야마 칸지로, 공간요소의 중첩을 이용한 매튜 챔버스와 카메이 요이치로의 작품 사례를 분석하고, 중첩이 시각언어로써 어떤 특징을 갖는지 비교·분석하였다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 형의 중첩이 현대 도예에서 공간성, 통합성, 반속성, 연속성 등을 동반하는 시각언어로써 역할을 수행하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이에 본 연구는 형의중첩을 통해 현대 도예의 조형성을 확장하는 가능성을 확인할 수 있다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
