The aim of this study was to reveal and understand the experiences of elderly patients’ life during clay artwork in a long-term care hospital. Using focus groups, they were scheduled with 10, 120-minute evaluation sessions, twice per week. Data was collected from April 1 to May 15, 2015. Collected data were analyzed on the basis of Colaizzi’s phenomenological methodology. The results revealed 12 meaning of themes and 5 core principals as follows: reminiscence of the special day, the missing on family, reflections on myself, resignation and adaptation of the last journey, external self-sacrifice for their children. These findings provided a deep understanding of the life experiences of elderly patients in the long term center. the participants reflected on how they lived and what they wanted during manipulating clay art work. The finding should be useful as foundational data for elderly patients to promote self-expression and clay art needs to be encourage by public or social programs as a platform for elderly patients to invigorate imagination.

본 연구는 점토활동을 통한 요양병원 노인환자의 삶에 대한 현상학적 연구이며, 점토활동이 그들의 삶의 성찰도고 및 소통의 매개체로서의 활용 방안에 대한 효과 검증이다. 또한 도자 예술의 본질적인 행위와 영역을 넘어 타 영역으로의 점근과 확장의 일환으로 병행되었다. 본 연구는 2015년 4월 1일부터 5월 15일까지 주별 2회, 120분간 10회차에 따라 이루어졌다. 본 연구의 자료는 colaizzi의 현상학적 방법에 의해 분석되었으며 연구 결과, 요양병원 노인환자의 삶의 경험은 회기별 주제에 따라 12개의 주제의미와 5개의 주제모음으로 도출되었다. 본 자료를 분석한 결과에서 5가지 주제모음으로 특별한 날에 대한 회상, 가족에 대한 그리움, 자신에 대한 성찰, 마지막 여정에 대한 체념과 순응, 자식에 대한 무한한 자기희생으로 드러났다. 이러한 연구 결과는 요양병원에 입원한 노인환자의 삶에 대한 깊은 이해를 제공할 뿐 아니라 점토활동 과정을 통해 노인환자들이 어떻게 살아왔는지, 무엇을 원했는지에 대한 이들의 삶의 경험을 반영하는 과정으로 보였다. 따라서 점토활동은 노인환자들이 자신의 내면을 표현할 수 있도록 이들의 경험을 긍정적 방향으로 증진시키도록 돕기 때문에 점토활동을 다양하게 적용하여 노인환자들의 삶의 과정에 유용한 도구로서 활용될 수 있기를 바라는 바이다.
