This study discussed the development and acceptance of literary foundation of Shin, Sung Gyeom, a historical character from the late Shilla Unification and early Goryeo Dynasty to derive its significance. Shin, Sung Gyeom interacted with Wang Geon since before his enthronement and played a critical role for the elimination of Gungye and enthronement of Wang Geon. When Wang Geon was attacked by Gyeonhwon of Late Baekje, he died in place of Wang Geon. Shin, Sung Gyeom was later named a loyal servant by Wang Geon, but he was actually a vanguard of coup d'etat and a military officer who was killed in a lost battle. In the mid-Goryeo Dynasty, King Yejong was struggling with homeland and international administration and looked for a military officer who can pose as a loyal character. He picked Shin, Sung Gyeom. King Yejong dramatized Shin, Sung Gyeom into a loyal character through and in an attempt to urge the officials of Gaegyeong to show their loyalty and to block their challenge against his authority. In other words, and transformed Shin, Sung Gyeom into someone who laid the foundation of state and devoted absolute loyalty to the king without any negative images and urged the officials to take him as an example. The image of Shin, Sung Gyeom created by King Yejong in Goryeo was handed down to the Joseon Dynasty. Shin, Sung Gyeom was worshipped at shrines and village schools by the late Joseon Dynasty and King Jeongjo even wrote a poem to remember him. King Jeongjo was interested in Shin, Sung Gyeom and drew a literary portrait for his administration. However, King Jeongjo promoted Shin, Sung Gyeom into a universally loyal official of East Asia and a national idol, whereas King Yejong of Goryeo kept him in ‘Seogyeong’ to strengthen his royal authority. Literary foundation of a historical character creates various ideas as it is often different from the historical evaluation. However, the images created by the absolute authority for political purposes are transmitted without criticism without any evaluation, so they can threaten the existence of literature itself. It is even more dangerous if the acts of the character were not for the public benefit, but for his/her own desire. As King Yejong and King Jeongjo dressed Shin, Sung Gyeom in 'integrity' and 'faith' through literature to praise and instigate unjust deaths for the king without any historical facts, their literature should be reevaluated historically and in literature.

이 논문의 목적은 나말여초 인물인 신숭겸에 대한 문학적 초상의 형성과 수용 양상을 통해 이를 성찰하는데 있다. 신숭겸은 왕건이 왕위에 오르기 전부터 그와 교유가 있었으며, 원래 주군이었던 궁예를 제거하고 왕건을 왕으로 추대하는 데 결정적인 역할을 한 인물이다. 그리고 왕건이 후백제 견훤에 의해 죽을 위기를 맞게 되자 신숭겸은 그를 대신하여 죽게 됨으로써 신숭겸은 왕건으로부터 절개 있는 충신이라는 이름을 얻게 된다. 다만 신숭겸의 생애를 고려했을 때 그는 쿠데타의 선봉자, 패전하여 전사한 일개의 무인에 불과하다고 할 수 있으나, 신숭겸의 대사 사건은 극적 서사가 이루면서 긍정적으로 수용되었다. 고려 중기 대내외적으로 국정 난맥에 시달리던 예종은 이를 극복하기 위해 충의로운 인물을 찾게 되는데 그 가운데 신숭겸이 채택되었다. 예종은 <도이장시(悼二將詩)>와 <도이장가(悼二將歌)>를 통해 신숭겸을 충성스러운 인물로 부각하여 개경의 관료들에게 충성을 권장하고 왕권에 대한 도전을 차단하려 하였다. 다시 말해 <도이장시>와 <도이장가>는 개경의 신료들을 의식하여, 신숭겸에 대한 일체의 부정적 이미지를 걷어내고 ‘국가의 기틀을 마련한 자, 군왕에 절대적 충성을 다하는 자’로 묘사한 한 정치 가요라 할 수 있다. 고려 예종 대 가공된 신숭겸의 초상은 조선시대에도 그대로 이어졌으며, 조선후기에 이르면 신숭겸에 대한 숭배는 사당과 서원을 통해 이루어졌다. 정조는 그에 대한 치제시(致祭詩)를 지었는데, 이는 정조가 정국 운영을 위한 방편으로 선택한 정치 문학적 행위라 할 수 있다. 다만 위 둘이 다른 점은 고려 예종이 신숭겸을 ‘서경’에 두어 왕권을 강조하기 위한 문학적 초상을 그렸다면, 정조는 신숭겸을 동아시아의 보편적 충렬지사로 승격시켜 국가적 차원에서의 우상으로 만들어 낸 것이라 할 수 있다. 대개 역사적 인물에 대한 문학적 형상화는 역사적 평가와 다른 차원에서 이루어지며 다기한 양상을 보이기 마련이다. 하지만 최고 권력자가 정치적 목적에 따라 형상화된 인물상은 다양한 평가가 차단된 채 전승되기 때문에, 일체의 비판이 허용되기 어렵다. 따라서 이와 같은 문학 행위는 문학의 존재 가치를 흔들 수 있다. 게다가 형상화 된 인물의 행위가 공동체의 선을 위한 것이 아니라 한 개인의 욕망을 위한 강요된 희생이라면 그 위험성은 심각하다고 할 수 있다. 결국 예종과 정조는 신숭겸에 대한 문학 행위는 그에 대한 역사적 사실의 일면만을 강조하고 ‘절개’, ‘충의’의 옷을 입혀, 군주를 위해 죽은 것을 찬양하였으므로 그들의 작품은 역사적으로나 문학사적으로 재평가되어야 할 것이다.
